First Harvest – June 20, 2009

dsc04600

One of my favorite blogs likes to keep track of the poundage that comes off their 1/10th urban garden… I think I’m going to do that this year…

So… here is my first harvest of the year… probably a little bit jumping the gun but I saw sugar pea pods and I just couldn’t help myself! And I yanked a pair of onions to see how they are doing…

My first harvest…. 3 ounces!!!! YEAH!!!

Since I’ve spent about, oh $500 this year to install my 500 square feet of gardens… wow, a dollar a foot… that’s really not that bad you know… next year will be WAY WAY lower… oops…. lost my train of thought there… okay, so, $500 for 3 ounces… wow… that’s about oh $166 dollars an ounce peas and onions there!

Well, there’s a lot more coming…. but it was so stinkin’ rewarding to warm up those peas and slice the onions and simmer them in a little homemade butter…. wow…. my first meal…. er, ahem… side dish from the Moby farm!!! The girls were impressed and watched, they’re not into peas or onions much, so they let me have the first couple bites of the success of our little endeavor! (They are wonderful kids like that…)

Can’t wait to see what another week or two brings to the table… literally!

June 20th 2009 Garden Update

Doesn’t the Moby look nice with another pair of shutters from the shutters of the week club? I believe another pair are arriving Monday…. (g)

The front door got painted… the same hunter green as the shutters, but it’s kinda hard to tell. Looks black to me from here, but honest, it’s green. We’re painting the trim while on the door as soon as it stops raining and the trim dries out good…

Look! Our soul-survivor apple is hanging in there… I can’t believe it’s still doing so well. All the other little ones we lost the first week of transplanting, but this one red delicious is hanging on, and has made it past the shock of transplanting and all. Most of the trees did pretty good… one little golden got a little wilty and some of the leaves dropped, but it’s doing good now. I’m so glad! They look so cute in the front yard.

The pumpkins are flowering! They are LOVING all this rain we got… two super duper downpour storms and then on and off all day rain….

dsc04583

Our handful of blueberries are actually starting to look, well, like blueberries!!! Jessy is so excited. They are being shaded by a nice big crop of sunflower plants…. which are getting nice and tall and thick stalked!

dsc04584

Strawberries are hanging in there… there are a few berries, but I think this year is best suited for just getting established and growing strong. Having a little weed problem in this berry bed… the dirt I bought was pretty weed-seedy…. but we’re trying to stay diligent….

dsc04586

May have to get another bag or two of mulch and try and keep them nasty weedies down….

I actually have a few raspberry blooms! They are trying… bless their little berry hearts…. hard enough being mailed and then transplanted and all to a new place, I really didn’t expect them to bloom this year, but they’re giving it a good try! We might have like three muffins worth of berries from the straw, blue and raspberry bed this year!

Look! Pea-Pods!!!! I might actually get to pick something tonight! WOW!

dsc04590

I couldn’t help it… I pulled an onion. I wanted to see how far they were growing! They got flattened by the heavy rains… I hope they perk back up after a day or two.

dsc04591

Potatoes are going nuts in those grow bags…. I need to add some more dirt to them and build them up… I want to see how many taters I can get out of them!

dsc04592

Okay… can someone tell me what is going on with the cauliflower? It was looking wonderful and all the sudden it is starting to look more like broccoli! HA HA HA…. I’m never grown cauliflower before… I think I need to do a little research… something is up with this stuff.

dsc04593

Tomatoes are really doing good… lots of good green babies on the vines. I only planted 8 plants and a mix too… grape, beefsteak, brandiwine, striped heirloom and a cherry or two… mostly pairs, except for the striped and grape ones… I wanted a nice mixture of tomatoes. My kids don’t eat them except as ketchup or spaghetti sauce…. so I wanted a nice mix of them. I’m going to make ketchup and spaghetti sauce and of course my favorite sweet pepper salsa and I think I want to try and dry some too! I have big plans for my tomaters….

dsc04595

Peppers are doing good! I planted only green and sweet peppers because I’m allergic to jalapenos really bad… which was a bummer when we lived in San Diego… so much of the wonderful Mexican food, which I loved, had a little too much of it in it everything… so I just usually stuck to margaritas! Safer that way… No, honestly, some stuff I could eat, but I had to be careful… so, nothing hot in my garden, thanks. But I got a couple varieties of sweet ones for my salsa and to make stuffed peppers… yum….

dsc04597

Sunflowers and the gourds and mini pumpkins are going to town in the corn field, and like one or two little tips of the corn are poking up… It was really dry after we planted the corn… I’m hoping that all the rain the last couple days will wake them up a little bit and get things rolling.

If they don’t get going, I’ll have a failed corn harvest!!! OH NO!!! We’ll starve over the winter!!! Pa will have to get a job in the big city and we’ll have to twist hay to heat the cabin… oh, wait a minute. Having Little House flashbacks… Sure did love reading those books…. Well. As soon as we fill up the new raised beds with MORE DIRT…. I am going to plant more corn. I think I’ll soak the little dudes for a couple hours before… they were really really dried up looking. That might help them a bit. Might have to get another pack or two and see what gives with the corn business….

dsc04596

Well, at least the cat-nip is sprouted and growing good….

Well, that’s how it’s all looking here at the Moby farm… We had a stay inside day for the most part… Well, we did some errands and such, groceries and Office Max for some business stuff and went out to lunch for coney hot dogs and chili-cheese fries… yum…. and then I did my favorite Saturday afternoon activity…. a little reading and a nap… sigh…. I believe that we should adopt the siesta as a national activity…

Worked on a bunch of websites for clients and some for us… and then I learned how to do audio in a blog… (as you might have noticed in the two previous posts!) and basically just hung out with my children… Pretty good life I think….
