New Book Shelf

dsc04559

Okay…. Here’s a sweet little moby hack! I really really needed a bookshelf for a few favorite books…. and I also wanted a place to set my phone and glasses, maybe a glass of water, whatever…. normally one would set on a night stand.

Well, the way my room works, I just don’t have space for a nightstand next to the bed.

And my stack of books on a table in the room was really getting out of control….

I thought about buying a shelf, but then where would I put it, things are a little cramped in my small hut…. and then it hit me…. How about a little shelf on the back of my headboard! It was almost wide enough anyway and I often would precariously balance a book up there, but it was just a little shy of being wide enough.

So I bought a nice pine board and had Tim attach it to the top….

And then I stained it….

HAHAHA….. never in my life have I ever got to lay in bed and paint! Well, I didn’t want to not stain the little underneath part. I would have forever laid there and looked at that and thought, swell…. I forgot that part.

Doesn’t that look brilliant? (I’ve got more books just had to round them all up and such….) I just couldn’t wait… had to snap a picture of it, it’s so cute. AND functional!

Now, hopefully I won’t get a rude awakening from a kitty pushed book…. I just might…. we’ll see how well my “hack” worked but I think it will do just nicely!

Third Week of June…

Garden Update:

Bought some tomato cages today because my mo’s were getting a little tall and leggy! Corralled those bad boys and weeded… added some twine weaved in the pea crib fences to help get them started… they are blooming and there are even a few little mini peapods growing!!! Lot it…

Mr. Gnome is getting a little consumed by the pea plants!

The wheat field is growing… not sure if it’s the way it’s suppose to look but it’s definately growing. It’s starting to branch and look more well, like wheat, sorta… I realize it’s a little dense… we hand sowed it like the serfs of old… it’s more growing, ah, like wild wheat! Yeah… that’s the ticket. Wild wheat.

Most everything is growing pretty good.

I’m not impressed with the carrots.. they are dreadfully slow growing. The garlic is finally up and that’s cool. Potatoes are going NUTS…. watermelon, well, that and the cantelope is not really doing very well. Still look kind of the same, to be honest. Lost on watermelon plant. I’ve never had good luck with melons… Maggie really wanted to grow the cantelopes… and I said we could give them a try, but I have a feeling, they are not going to do well in the Moby homestead victory garden. But, you never know…

I think I’m going to move the watermellon out to the new beds. It’s definately much more sunnier there and i think they might like that. I believe I’ll put spinach and peas in the grow bags… they will like the slightly shady area I think.

Tomatoes are doing very well, have quite a few little dudes already growing. One’s even got bug bites all over it!

Remind Self…. get a little organic bug spray to give the farm a light dusting…

Beans are doing so so… the sunflowers and gourds are up in the corn field and there are just a couple early bloomers of corn peeking up from the raised dirt field… how exciting. I’ll bet in a couple days we’ll have two perfect little rows of corn babies!!!

2 New Raised Beds…

Well, I had a little extra open space… So I decided to try and build these beds in this style that I saw on someone’s blog… can’t remember where.

When we built the others, we used 10 and 12 inch wide boards… kind of expensive actually. And primarily due to having to be bigger trees and all to get good wide boards out of them.

So instead, I bought 1 x 4’s…. 8 feet long. They were only $2.07 each. Not too bad. Each bed was only 9 boards. And we used 2 x 2 stock in the corners to stablize them.

They are staggered, like logs basically… and screwed into the 2×2 corners.

Nice looking….

SInce there was a weird space behind the Moby, on the ugly side, behind the water meter… It was just perfect for two raised beds.

I bought 20 – 40 pound bags of topsoil and 6 bags of composted manure. Guess what? Didn’t even top one of the beds!!! Oh well… another day, another $1.21 a bag of dirt. I’ll probably get like 25 more bags or so, and level it off and that will be good for this year. We’lre just going to grow more corn, beans and peas in there, with some leaf lettuce and spinach too….

dsc04537

Very handsome looking… we now have 488 sq. ft of raised beds all working for harvest in a few months… pretty keen. As well as our little mini-orchard of 6 dwarf fruit trees and our 4 grow bags of potatoes!

Yes, I am the dirt queen at the moment… Mulch and dirt are my treasures…
