Itty Bitty Kitty Committee…

jessykittylady

Well, out in the country, kitties and rural living seem to go hand in hand.  Seems every other year, kittens appear.  And we do the best we can, finding homes and such.  But these fellas showed up and we did our best, but soon it was apparent, this is their home.

And how could you not love them?  They are the perfect blend of our wish list of kittens!  And all siblings!  It’s perfect.

There is a sweet fluffy calico girl that we have named Sophie.  She is so sweet and cuddly, but she can wrassle like a good ol’ boy with her brothers.  My girls have wanted a patchy calico kitten forever.  So now they have one.

And the little yellow tiger, well, he looks just like a lovely boy we lost two years ago, Baron.  He’s fiesty and a little hunter.  He’s going to be going outside to work with Duke, who was Baron’s brother.  I think they will make a lovely team outside, hunting mousies and raising trouble.  His name is Calcifer.

And last, a little gray tiger boy, that we have named Totoro.  He reminds me so much of my beloved boy Jack, who was attacked by something the first year we were here.  I miss that boy so much and now I have another chance to love on another little waylaid kitty child.  I do hope he likes yurts!  (As I hope to have one, some day!)  (And Totoro is coming with me!)

DSC_0499Aren’t they adorable?

So darn precious.

Of course, when they are wild and running through the house like banshees?  Another story.  But their batteries eventually run down and then they cuddle and snooze.  They love to sleep together and that is so sweet.

Our other kitties are accepting of the new inmates.   Dixie and Luna are getting elderly, being 17+ and 15 years old.  We know that time with them is short.  They are in good health, but still, you can tell, they are slowing down.  Dixie pretty much just sleeps and eats.  She seems fine with it.  However, the kitties have sparked a little fun in the grand dame.   She likes to sleep with them and she grooms and cleans them like babies.  They like to play with her tail and are very gentle when they head wrestle with her.  You can tell, they know she’s an elder.

Luna was not so pleased at first, rather put out by the little rug rags.  She would hiss at them when they tried to play with her and she batted a few rather roughly if they didn’t get out of her space.  But now, after a few days, she is resolved to their presence and I even caught her playing with Sophie…  for just a few minutes.  (Don’t tell anyone.)  I suspect she will come around in no time.

Lilly is still quite young, she’s almost three.  And she is having the time of her life with them.  She adores them.  And they play and wrestle and chase each other all over.  She has been a little lonely, because Dixie and Luna pretty much ignored her.  Now she has playmates.  And the kitties love her, too!   Okay, well, they love to play stalk Lilly and attack Lilly from the couch, and flying ninja kitten attack from the chair.  Yes, it’s rather a circus at the moment here.

DSC_0657 DSC_0941Thankfully, the bursts of crazy kitty antics are still fun to watch and they just love to play.  We are enjoying them a lot.   And the other critters are enjoying them as well, very good and tolerant of them.   Ratchet adores the itty bitty kitty committee…  and he even shares his bed with them.   They love to hang on his legs and swat at his tail.  He just sits there and smiles, thumping his tail.  He loves all little babies.  He’s such a sweet dog.   DSC_0949

Evee likes them as well, however, she is already to help discipline the little rugrats when they are being naughty.  If you say “bad kitty”  she is right there, ready to knock them down and lick them in their face.  It’s a weird thing.  But it’s Evee.

So for National Cat day, we doubled our number of cats!  Crazy, I know, but oh well.  If you can take care of them and give them a good home, get them fixed and keep the populations down, why not.  Since Luna brought home a nice big rat a few days ago, I know they are needed on the homestead.  We will keep a few in the house and all, but we will also let them learn to be outside kitties and help with the rodent population.  Everyone helps to make the homestead run smoothly.

And besides, how can you not love kitties!!!!  Awwwww…..

New Kitchen Shelves!

DSC_0642Ever since we moved in the place, we have had this weird space in the kitchen.  We are pretty sure at one point or another, there was a set of cabinets or something like that.  But they are long gone.  We have put things there, little tables, cabinets and such, but nothing really felt right.

It’s right underneath this huge pantry cabinet that we love.  So, we decided that we would like shelves all the way to the floor.  And we finally got started on it!

DSC_0645 DSC_0646We wanted to make sure it was strong, so we put down 2 x 4s on the floor to support the first shelf and then hung 2 x 4s on the back wall to hold the shelf in place.  We are learning!  We also added a nice plank on the end so that the shelves would have something to tie into and just be nice and sturdy!

Ratchet was the animal supervisor for today’s building project!

We decided on just two shelves and several people have asked why.  Well, we intend on getting a few nice large containers to be able to store flour, sugar, rice and such in.  Good sized and heavy, so those will set on the bottom shelf.  The top shelf we’d like to be able to find some nice baskets and such to sort things like tools and outside stuff, or even just inside things.  A work in progress for sure!

If we really dislike the spacing of the shelves, we can always add another shelf in the middle of that space.  A nice board was only about ten dollars.  Right now, we are going to live with it a bit and see how we like it.   Eventually, we would like to put some simple doors on the front since most of the things inside this shelf are more longer term pantry storage.  Hopefully, it doesn’t take us several years!

I’ll have to shoot a picture of it now, with all the stuff on it!  I can’t believe I forgot to.  It looks pretty cool.   We also took the white lacy curtains off the top part…  they were just not for us and would get so dirty and yucky fast.   I think I might make a half curtain, more like a topper to hide the top two shelves.  In the plans!

I know we move slowly on projects…  its because we are very busy working and doing some of the things that are very high priority.  Sometimes, we just don’t have the funds.  But, that’s okay, we just keep at it and someday, everything will be just lovely.   It’s so much more tolerable then it was when we moved in!  I can’t believe we are just months away from our 5 year anniversary!!!  Unbelievable!   We just love it here…

And look!  I finally got the bathroom painted the last coat!!!   It’s all done and looks lovely.  (It’s not that high gloss, just looks wet and weird when I snapped this shot!)  I have to sew the curtains for in there still…  it looks out into our courtyard so not one can see in.  Still…  I would like to finish the curtain and the shower curtain with the fabric that I picked out about a year ago!   Haha…  projects are a long term thing sometimes around the old homeplace!

Special Delivery!

DSC_0908

Our old stove had given up the ghost.  It was dead.  No longer functioning.

We had gotten a nice little toaster oven because at the time, a new stove was not in the budget.  Not even a used stove.

But that’s okay, we are patient and we used the crockpot a good deal, as well as cooking at the firepit and other creative means.  Actually, the toaster oven was very efficient and we didn’t mind at all.   We are used to making do until we can make do!

DSC_0909

Well, today was the day!   We had done some sign work for a friend in exchange for some ditch digging.  However, his little backhoe broke and it just hadn’t been fixed yet, what with harvest and haying season upon us.  Which was fine.  We are patient.  We understand.

However…  we learned that he had a nice used stove for sale from his sister!  Electric and pretty darn new…  so we struck up a bargain.  And we got the stove delivered with a big stack of hay as well for our critters!   Don’t you just love when a good trade works out for everyone?

Watch out there maple tree…  it’s a wide load!!!

DSC_0912

Pretty darn nice stove if I say so myself!   We are happy!

The chickens seemed uninterested, however.  DSC_0913  DSC_0916

With the stove offloaded, Jerry took the truck back to the pony barn so we could all unload the truck.  I thought it was very funny to see how interested all the animals were.  But then, it was a strange truck, in their yard, with food on it.  I guess if I saw an ice cream truck just show up in my back yard, I’d be pretty interested.

Honest, I did help stack hay!  I’m helpful, I’m not just the camera operator!  But Jerry and Maggie were doing quite a good job, I must say so.  He was pitching off and she was stacking.

DSC_0922

We ended up with 36 bales.  Not too bad for one truck load.  That is about 6 weeks worth of hay for our gang.  I would like at least 2 months of hay going into the winter…  November and December…  but, hey, 4 months would be unbelievable!  But not quite in the budget yet.  We will keep getting hay from our regular feed store run, 8 bales at a time.  If we make a few runs this month when the weather is still tolerable, and perhaps one more trip from Jerry, we might actually have plenty of hay and not have to drag it around out back through the snow and all!  That would be wonderful!

DSC_0923 DSC_0925

Maggie is contemplating the future.  Or perhaps just thinking about lunch.  Hard to tell sometimes.

Actually, this is going to be one of the first times since we have lived here that we are ready for winter.   We have a good deal of hay put up, the buildings are ready, heated water buckets at the stand ready and we are getting propane next week and more grain feed.  The idea is to have enough feed and fodder so that if it is nasty out, we can stay home!!!  Can’t tell you how nice it is to be able to stay home for a bad storm or cold temperatures…  just do chores and back into the warm house.  Driving 30 miles round trip for hay and feed just gets very old when it’s super cold!

DSC_0927

The chickens are still not impressed.  They will be more excited when the bags of feed come around.  Perhaps.  Chickens just don’t seem to get that excited about too much.

DSC_0929

The goaties, however, approve of the new hay!   They are taste testing and give it two hooves up!  Yum!

Don’t you like my little hay rack?  It’s an old guinea pig cage top.  We don’t have the bottom so I thought, why not?  It’s actually perfect.  Just enough of something to keep them from walking through it all and a freebie repurposed into a hay rack!  Yes!  Always good.

DSC_0930

And look at that beautiful new stove!  So happy!  All the burners work and it makes lovely food inside…  We are so happy!  (Don’t worry, we leveled it…  it was a little wonky, or well, our floor maybe is a little wonky…  needless to say, we got it all nice and level!)

Trading is one of the things that I love in the country.  Livestock, hardwork, appliances, wood, feed, you name it, it gets traded and bartered.  It works out good.  Now if we could only get someone to dig some ditches out for us…  I guess it’s going to be the shovel and the shoulder for us!  Good exercise!
