Planting garlic

dsc04325_m

Garlic is one of the weirdest plants I’ve ever seen growing.

It looks like something from another planet… I love that!

We finally got ours in the ground… had 3 huge elephant garlic cloves to plant and then about 30 or so regular garlic… we had a nice patch left in the raised beds… about 6 foot by 2 or so… and Jessy planted it all for me! She’s totally into the garden and all, especially now that her cauliflowers are like the top doing plants in the farm… (g)

Garlic is cool because if you leave it alone, it will grow crazy and return each year. Just go out to the garden and yank up one when you need it. Sweet. There ain’t nothing better than grilling your own potatoes and a big helping of your own chives and homemade butter and of course lots of garlic from your own patch… it’s absolutely heaven.

Can’t wait.

Corn Dog Cassarole…

dsc04344_m

Oh my…. does summer get any better?

We just had to try the Homesteading Housewife, Dana’s corn dog cassarole once we saw it on her blog! And it was mighty tasty!!

You should give it a try… here’s the details….

Corn Dog Dressing Bake

Ingredients

* 1 cup celery, chopped finely
* 1 large onion, chopped finely OR 1 heaping cup of sliced green onion (my favorite!)
* 2 Tablespoons butter or margarine
* 2 pounds (2 packages) Hot Dogs.
* two 8.5 oz. packages Corn Bread Mix (I love Jiffy Brand!)
* 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
* 2 eggs
* 1 1/2 cups milk
* 1/4 cup sugar
* 1 1/2 teaspoons rubbed sage
* 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
2. In a skillet, combine celery, onions & butter. Saute for 5 minutes. Pour into a large bowl.
3. Cut the hot dogs into fourths lengthwise. Then cut each hot dog strip into 4 pieces.
4. Pour hot dog pieces into the same skillet you used for the celery/onion mixture, saute hot dog pieces for 5 min or until lightly browned.
5. Add the browned hot dog pieces into the celery/onion mixture bowl.
6. In another large bowl, combine; eggs, milk, sugar, sage, & pepper.
7. add 1/2 of the hot dog /celery mixture & 1 1/2 cups of the shredded cheddar cheese, into the milk mixture. Stir in the corn bread mix.
8. Spread the mixture into a 13×9 backing dish.
9. Top with the remaining half of the hot dog/celery mix. Sprinkle remaining 1/2 cup of cheese over the top.
10. Bake, uncovered, at 400 degrees for approx 35 min, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
11. Enjoy!

Now, we didn’t do the onion part… just didn’t have any ready to go, and I think that would have made it even better! But it was mighty tasty and sure to join our fleet of family favorites!

Be sure to go and check out Dana’s blog… she’s one funny lady and she has some great observations on life and homesteading!

Just a few photos from the Moby….

I love my kids… did I mention that ever?

I love that they don’t treat anything we do with complaining. I’m careful not to overwhelm their days with endless chores and all, in fact, they have most of their days free to do whatever now that it’s summer and all. I just ask, and they gladly join in. I guess because for the most part, I don’t demand they do it, I ask and they are glad to help out. If they can’t they know I’ll do it anyway. I like that. They are very good kids…

I couldn’t resist…. I got a pair of these perrenials at Menards the other day… the tag said “Goats Beard”… I need to look that up in my books or online. They are really pretty keen looking… different. I like the dark colors of their stems and all, and they are nice and tall. I like that in a flower bed, some various heights to the flora…

I found this little brown metal pocket somewhere and I just liked it a lot… It’s got a little bit of spearmint growing in it now.. Tim hung a screw for me under my cheery sun and I just think it looks cute. Can’t wait for them to finish rebuilding the door and get my old fashioned screen door on the Moby! She’s gonna look fine….

I found this old white camp teapot at a thrift store and it was just so cute… I’m not one into lots of doo dads and such, but this was just screaming for a little plant and all, and then we were at Lowes and Jessy found the most beatiful pinky purple calla lilly… and we knew it was the thing for the teapot.

And a little bit of herbs… spearmint! Doesn’t it look darling?

I’m going to paint and then make a bottle cap top to that little black table I got at a second hand furniture store nearby… but that’s probably a job for next week! I actually have to work this weekend and get a bunch of client edits done on their websites! Someone’s got to pay the bills!!! (g)

But that’s a little photo roundup of the last couple days… just random pictures that needed to be seen.
