It’s Grilling Time!

We got a new grill on sale at Lowes… a discontinued model and only $44. How can you go wrong?

There is nothing better than grilling some chicken… veggies, corn, potatoes… or a nice burger or a steak… fire and food just seems to go together nice in the cool evening.

We had some delicacies from our favorite local butcher shop… they make these little tenderloin wraps that are marinated… prime rib, pork and turkey and we’ve been dying to try them… so we got one of each and we are going to taste test them…. fresh and hot off the brand new grill.

My little yardsale table find (for $5!) did the job pretty good… it’s just a tad bit skinny… and I did have another job for it… but it worked in a pinch. I need to keep my eye out for a better table to become the grilling station….

Oh, but was it wonderful…. sat outside and read a little while the grill sizzled and Gypsy sat next to me and drooled like a dog in love. She could hardly wait.

The girls joined me and Maggie gathered sticks and got the firepit ready for dessert… We also had some pasta and veggies in this garlic sauce… a package deal but it was tasty… and a bit of Maggie’s homemade potato salad… very tasty.

We decided that we loved the turkey ones… the pork was next and the prime rib was last! I was surprised, I thought the prime rib one would be a real hit, but it was a ground rib and kinda ended up tasting like a good burger, but still like a burger. The other two were marinated and juicy and just perfectly wonderful. They were wrapped with bacon, always a hit, eh? And just tender and flavorful. I can’t say we’ll be having them all the time… but at $1.69 – $1.99 each, it’s really not that bad, for a special treat… Less than $6 for the three of us for a delish little grill treat… heck a stupid meal at McDs is like $5 for ONE person! Add a little salad, maybe some fresh garden veggies… and you’ve got a nice meal!

And then… smores for desert!!! Smores, the Chekal Girl Way… toast up a smushy marshmellow and then smash it between two chocolate coated shortbread cookies!!! YUM! And easy too… that candy bar, gramham cracker thing is kinda lumpy and hard to do! We find it easier to use either the chocolate coated shortbread or gramham cracker cookies instead!

The rain cut our lovely evening short, but we had a great time… grilling and eating outside for the first time at the moby this year!!!

New Books

We cleaned out a shelf and found a bunch of books that could go to our favorite used book store… Book Cents in Toledo.

We ended up with like 37 dollars in credit and after picking out our books, we still had to pay like $12! But we got a lot of nice books! Some gardening, business, bird watching, crafts, a cookbook and a couple Garfield books and a book by one of my favorite bloggers… Jon Katz.

No doubt, trading in books is a great way to save and get some new reading material… fun too!

Nothing better than sitting on the patio watching the day go by and reading a good book…

I only need my hammock now….

Skeeter Report – Day One

dsc04319_m

After much research and web surfing and comparing and all, we finally decided on a product called Mosquito Barrier.

It was just too much. Everytime we went outside, we were being harvested by a cloud of these nasty dudes. They were EVERYWHERE and day or evening, didn’t matter. And getting in to the Moby all the time, it was dreadful. I remember it being fairly bad last year, but we were working inside so much, that we would crank the air conditioners and that seemed to stop them inside.

But, I finally was contemplating mass murder with heavy stuff, it was so bad. But thankfully, I didn’t… and found this stuff.
So far… success.

It’s all natural, and it’s basically pure garlic oil. With a touch of citric acid… I believe to keep the stuff stable. Safe for kids, dogs, plants, etc. You just mix a couple ounces to a gallon of water and start spraying all over. You know… we found the two areas that they are really hanging out in… the wheat field and that big evergreen tree.

Reason we know? The minute we started to spray those two areas? A CLOUD swarmed out and away… it was amazing. They HATE that stuff.

We used about 8 ounces, from the big 32 ounce bottle… with two gallons or so of water.

Sprayed everywhere… grass, trees, plants, all over. And it has a pleasant smell, it’s not bad. Makes you crave Italian food though…

We’ll repeat it in a week, to really make sure it’s good, but they claim that you can apply it like once a month after you first get the area under control. And let me tell you… we were out the very next day, in the evening… and we only saw a couple brave souls out… it has SEVERELY reduced the numbers! It was wonderful! We actually enjoyed the evening outside without being covered in welts!

I think we’re on to something….
