Our first girl lambs!!!

Well, we were waiting and waiting and hoping for some girl babies to get our ratio in check and Iris helped!   And of course, she had to go and throw off our whole “babies are always born in the morning” thing!   She had her babies around 11 PM!!!   I was doing the last bed check and found her with these two little darlings, all cleaned off and taking their first wobbly steps!

I checked them over and was so happy!  Twin girls!!!   Yah!!!   They are named Ginger and Rosemary!    Ginger is the one with white speckles on her little head, Rosemary is the smaller, solid color baby.

Of course, Iris had her little princesses all clean and safely tucked in the back of the sheep barn.   Safe and sound.   They are so precious!   Can’t believe we are almost done with lambing…  two more mommas to go!

It was getting late and time for bed and I didn’t want to bother them too much with the flash.  Just a couple quick shots to document the occasion!   So happy for Iris and another successful birth.   She is now a mom, a grandma and a great grandma at the same time!!!   That is certainly impressive, don’t you think?  I can’t even try and figure out what is the connections.   I mean, her babies were born great aunts!!!   Pretty amazing, eh?  And aunts!  Ah, sheep!!!

Another little baby lamb…

We came home from a trip to Toledo for the evening and we found the barnyard in chaos!   Galadriel had JUST had her baby lamb!   It’s the very first nighttime lambing we have had in the last three years of babies!  Pretty amazing since ALL our other babies were born from about 6 am to noon at the latest.  Never middle of the night, never later evening or afternoon.  It’s a full moon and it had been a crazy crazy day, so I am just not surprised!!

Even the other mommas are confused…  a nighttime baby?  What was she thinking!

It was a little tricky but we managed to catch Galadriel and her new little princeling…  we are calling Fennel.  He’s a cutie and for a first time yearling mom, Galadriel is doing a very good job of keeping and eye on him and cleaning him up.  We moved them to the sheep shack and got everyone settled in.

All the rest of the flock was just oddly nervous and restless.   Babies in the night bring predators!   They were all very very alert and watchful, skittish and weird.   Once we got them locked up and put out a little calm down hay, the yard was back to a nice balmy calm.

Hard to see, but there was a hazy full moon out through the tall maple trees…  We all went back to bed and let mom and baby bond…

In the morning, it was clear that Galadriel was very bonded to her nipper and that she was very very ready to get out and join her herdmates.  Her little baby, whom we named Fennel, is doing nicely.   He needs a good brushing because it was a bit muddy out and rainy, and he has dried mud on his one flank.  But we can’t get him away from momma!   We will try again in a bit.  No sense of stressing them too much on introduction day!

Our three little boy lambs!   Waaaa!    So cute, but I really wanted ewes to retain for our spinner’s flock!   Too many boys and that means trip to freezer camp in the fall!   I might be able to keep one or two as whethers if their coats really mature nicely, but gosh…  boys, boys, boys!  DSC_0877

Well, we have three more ladies in waiting.   And Iris is surely carrying twins, as she always does.  Bonnie is hard to tell, she’s a big chunky lady to begin with.   But she seems pretty heavy as well.   Pearl, she’s a first timer and frankly she doesn’t look that big to me.   Guess time will tell.   But four or five girls would make up for this boy-a-palooza going on!  haha…  DSC_0878

The other moms are checking out the new little prince of the barnyard…   he is so cute.   He looks just like his daddy when he was a wee lamb!    Everyone was being very nice and quiet around the new pair.  They understand.

I swear Pearl is asking Galadriel about her birth experiences….

Galadriel:  “I dunno, it hurt a lot and then all the sudden there was this little cutie and he came out my backside!”

Pearl:  Eyes wide in amazement…  “Oh My GoSh!   Why do you think that happened???  Are you going to keep it?”

Galadriel:  “Yeah, it’s pretty darn cute and I like how it smells….”

Even Buttercup is being very kind and sweet to the babies.   Unlike her own baby which she HATED with a vengeance…   maybe she will be ready next fall to breed again!  Who knows!
