Sunday Evening Garden Update

Well, it’s becoming a bit of a ritual… I like to wrap up the weekend with a little snapshot of how the garden is growing… I’m so excited, we’re up to 6 pounds of produce so far!!! Mostly peas and beans, a pepper or two and some onions… still, it’s pretty exciting.

So far, I’ve been the one to eat most of the goodies, because my kids are not real veggie eaters. I’m trying hard to change that… Maggie has learned that she likes peas from the garden and baby cukes from the farmer’s market. Jessy is still holding out… she’s my carrots and broccoli only child, though she has kinda accepted the baby cukes too… kinda funny, but she’s slowly getting a taste for them.

Corn and carrots… they are both waiting for those. And garlic. Though I don’t really call that a veggie… it’s more of a seasoning.

Let’s get on with the tour, shall we?

First up… my big surprised after we returned home from camping…. RED TOMATOES!!!!!!!

Oh my… beautiful little cherry tomatoes! Two or three are pretty red… I’m going to let them go a day or two and have a nice yummy salad with them.

And look! A Brandywine is almost red… a few more days I think….

Beautiful…..

And look… some purple peppers are getting there… still a little small, but the color is deep and lucious… at least 5 or 6 good ones already getting ready for some chicken and onions on the grill…. mmmmmm….

The new beds of corn and beans and radish are doing pretty nicely… my first crop of beans are just about done for… they did a good batch though, but not enough for me to freeze… they were so good, I ate them all as they came in the house in several batches. I hope that the second batch will do okay, that bed is a lot sunnier than the first crop lived in.

Corn is doing nicely… I’m going to get some more seed and plant the deep rows tomorrow… I SO want corn along the ugly side. I’m just not sure why it didn’t take the first planting. I think the seed was just old or something. I don’t know. If I plant again there and nothing, then I’ll know that something is up.

We overturned the 1st planting radish and pearl onions. They were all done. Peas too. I was VERY disappointed in the radish. Only got like 3 or 4. Everything just bolted and went to seed. I think perhaps it was too closely planted, or just didn’t like the area. I don’t know. My 2nd planting is in a super sunny, full full sun area. And I am going to thin them. See if that helps.

Not sure what I am going to plant there… defiantely more peas along the fence… and probably spinach and leaf lettuce as I have more of those seeds. We’re having good luck with broccoli so i might get a couple 6-packs of those starts that are all on sale right now! See if we can get a little bit more out of the beds.

I’m so excited, we are up to 6 pounds of produce so far. So that means it’s all been about oh, $83 a pound so far! HAHAHA… oh well, there’s more to come… it’s only middle of July! Here in Toledo, we easily garden in September. And if I use some cover I might even get into October if it’s mild.

The potatoes are still going strong… got leaf lettuce and baby spinach coming up and new peas in the grow bag. All the garlic is up and growing, not gang busters but it all seems to have come up, which is cool. We’ve had NO real rain for almost 3 weeks now and the grass is all dead and dying. It’s been hard to keep the garden going… lots of watering. They say there’s about a 40% chance on Tuesday, so I am SOOOOO doing the rain dance every day. It’s the apple trees that really need a good good soak. And the pumpkins. Well, darn it, everything needs a gooooood long drink from the sky. My water pressure is not good and it takes FOREVER to water everything nicely.

I’m thinking about calling out Fred the plumber to see what is up. Well, I know what is up… there is scale buildup on the pipe coming out of the crock and water supply. We didn’t replace that pipe because it was pretty solid and looked good. Park feller came down and checked it and said, yeah, it’s really built up. I’m just not sure that I can handle that change out. Time for a professional I guess.

That’s okay… if it helps with water pressure so I can actually run a sprinkler, that will be good in the long run. It’s all good!

Take a look at the sunflower patch! Glorious!!!

Plastic Bag Update….

Here’s a couple things I found while poking around the web for like minded folks about the plastic bag thing.

I am happy to report that I am getting closer and closer to being plastic bag free myself. We have just a little stash of them that we are saving for nasty pickups and doggie prizes when out in public… but we’re getting very close to bringing in no bags. I’m finally remembering to bring them into the store… instead of forgetting them, and the girls are good to remind me when I forget. We have quite a little assortment of them and so far, they work just fine and we haven’t run out say at the grocery or wherever.

Take a look at this, though…. a WHOLE city in England has gone plastic-bag free! Wonderful!

The city of Modbury, UK decided a bit ago that the plastic bags were just bad… expensive, don’t break down for thousands of years and bad for wildlife, etc. So they worked at it and got it down to the fact that they are now plastic bag free and have gotten a lot of attention and awards for doing so. I think this is a cool site and lots of good links and ideas… good stuff!

www.plasticbagfree.com

And then I stumbled upon this site… a sort of charity for making bags!

www.thebagshare.org

Basically, these folks get together and craft and sew simply bags from garage sale tshirts and other things like curtains and such that is basically then, repurposed for good use. And then they donate the clever little bags to local smaller merchants to encourage them to give them out instead of plastic. Each bag has a little tag that encourages the recipient to pass it on or keep using it. A neat thing! I think the girls and I might start doing this for fun. They are learning to sew and tote bags are great practice… sounds fun and clever to me.

oakies-car

We’ll we’re going bluegrass camping. Yeah, that’s where we load up everything we own for 2 days of picking and grinning at the Country Stage Music Park in Nova Ohio!

It’s a ton of fun and we’re ready to go. It’s kind of amazing how much stuff you need to bring just for two days! Shesh!

So… I’ll let you all know when we get back about all the fun and adventures we had! You know me… I’ll have video and pictures galore!

Bye bye!
