75% off Perennials!

DSC06545

Well, I had Jessy drive me to the Lowes a day ago… to pick up my yearly supply of dead perennials! Yes, it’s that time of the year! The rangy, scraggy looking, nearly dead perennials find there way to my yard. And best of all… at 75% off.

I got 3 lovely little umbrella ferns for the cool shady spots of the kitty garden… and 3 pretty Russian blue sage plants… also planted in the kitty garden and the best find of all?

A HUGE 5 gallon blue wisteria!!! Originally marked $39 and now only $9! OH HOW COOL…..

I love wisteria. At my home, my lost home, I had planted wisteria on my big front porch and I babied that stuff for a good 3 years or so and had it up to the porch roof and starting to bloom. And then, well, things fell apart. I had to leave it, it would have been rude to uproot everything in my yard, but if I had had the energy, I might have tried, but I didn’t. So it stayed.

But now I have a new beautiful, healthy, strong plant to take it’s place. It’s got three strong branches and I hope to train it up and over the shed next year. I hope it makes it through the winter. I’m sure it will. We’ll have the grape vine sisters on the north corner and the blue wisteria on the south corner! How delightful!

If you haven’t discovered this wonderful way to get great plant material for CHEAP… make sure you dash down to your local big box hardware joint and see what is left in the back corner and marked down drastically. Last year I spent about $20 and got tons of plants… this year I only spent $14 and it will pay wonderful dividends in the spring and summer to come!

We also planted just about all of our spring bulbs… here and there, adding clumps of color to the spring time delight. We put a lot of them around our bunny rock out front. The beautiful foxtail grass did a nice display of pretty plumage and so did the peach tree. They apparently love the location, so we decided it would be nice to have a beautiful display of tulips and little purple bloomers all over the place. I can’t wait to see how it turns out! Only like 5 more months!!!

Blueberry Muffins…

DSC06556

I’m trying to build up my base of simple, easy basic recipes that you can alter and use for many purposes. And I’ve been looking for a good muffin recipe and I think I have one. This one has passed the muster so far and we’re testing it out on a few difference types…. next will be chocolate chip muffins and banana muffins… same base recipe with different add ins.

They turned out pretty nice. I adjust the recipe just a tad to be a little sweeter… we like a sweet muffin. If you don’t, then just back down the white sugar a bit. I want to try them with honey too, and see if that changes it any, but basically, here’s the skinny.

Simple Easy Muffins

2 cups all purpose flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon of salt
3/4 cup white sugar
1 egg
1 cup milk
1/4 cup vegetable oil

I mix it all up at once… just load up the bowl and mix away. Just till it’s all incorporated and all…. don’t overmix muffins! Add whatever you’d like… fruit, nuts, chips, veggie, cheese…. about a cup full.

Spoon into cups, cook in a 400 degree oven and they take about 25 minutes… watch them to see how they look about 20 minutes on.

Freeze great, store easy, and just yummy warm out of the oven!

Driving Firsts

DSC06537

Awwww… it’s my big baby’s first time at a drive thru window with her new car!!!! How special!

(My kids are used to having a phototog mom that likes to carry her little digital around in the purse… always read to catch those special moments, like “do you want fries with that?” hahahhaa)

She has to learn maneuverability because her drivers test is next Thursday, so I want to make sure she’s ready to go. All the important things like driving while eating and fast food lane etiquette and how to change the station while driving and all that stuff we all take for granted and they just don’t teach at driver’s ed. Ahem.

She’s doing pretty good… she’s getting there. Of course, I wish she could have a year of coached driving, but well, gotta let them try it on their own soon enough. She’s got the whole driving the car down great, it’s just teaching her how to deal with the rest of the driving world out there…. speeders and sudden lane changers and lawbreakers and those that just act erratic and all without warning. She only thinks about 5 feet outside of the car. And I need to get her thinking 25 feet and further! She’ll get it. Now that she’s got her own baby to protect, she’s getting a little more defensive driving experience. She’ll be fine. She’s cautious and not a daredevil so I think it’s just added the hours of experience now to her skill and she’ll be good and safe out there.
