Fowl Reduction…

DSC_0652

A few things became apparent this summer to us.   With Maggie out of commission, we had to make a few changes.  Jessy and I have learned and adapted to additional chores as well as just helping Maggie out, day to day.  On crutches, it’s hard for her to carry things or do much that includes transporting herself and other things.  Which seems to be what everyone does all the time!  But we’ve gotten by and gotten our routines fixed and settled so it’s really not that big of a deal.

However, something that I had been thinking about, seemed to proof it’s unpleasant head.    Our huge flock of chickens was simply not very efficient for us, in any way.  We were spending quite a bit of money on our tight budget on feed, and chore time was eating into our contentment.  With egg deliveries and sales, we were not even making the feed bill.   And to top it all off, the birds seemed to be discontent as well.  Kind of a bad situation all the way around.

So we made the group decision to exit the egg business and to sell off half of our flock.  There is absolutely no way that we would have NO chickens… because we adore our birds.  And we knew that no one would want all our roosters, so we decided that the bulk of them would stay, and just continue to be free ranging roos, as they have been all summer and are doing fine.

We also have decided that this small batch of meat birds we’re raising right now will be the last for awhile.   At least until next fall.  Raising large numbers of meat birds in the summer when our budget is traditionally tighter is just not making sense.  We love the idea of eating our own carefully raised birds, but I think it can be done in the cooler months when it’s easier to care for them and our budget is more able to handle the cost of chicks, feed, processing and all.  Just makes sense, doesn’t it?

When I listed our flock for sale on our various Facebook pages, it was only about 5 minutes before we had a buyer!  That was pretty neat.  Folks know our birds are healthy and well adjusted, heck, half of them are nearly pets and tame as house cats.  And it was even better that our angel buyer was a good friend, my weaving mentor, Miss Jessica…  And she wanted them all!  And what made things even sweeter, is that we traded the birds for weaving supplies!!!  She got a bunch of nice birds, we got less cost and chores and I got a big box of weaving warp that should keep me for many many months!   Perfect!  I just didn’t see any room in the budget for a load of warp…  You need to buy the rolls of warp string in groups of 24 and each roll is nearly $4-$5 a roll!  That’s a nice little chunk of change in a tight budget.  I got a huge box of 48 rolls in exchange!   And black and grays, and demin blue which are more pricey!  I can’t wait to get weaving again!

I thought that Maggie might be upset about the situation, but was very relieved that she was just fine with it.  She’s a realist.  I guess she was already thinking that they were a bit too much work, as caring for them all took up a good portion of her day before the accident.  She said it was going to be good to get back to knowing all their names!  I think she’s right.   We added 50 birds to the mix last summer when we thought we would have quite a few interested in our eggs.  And the feed costs were lower.  But then one bigger client went out of business and then we sold a few birds, but still had close to 80 birds.  And often we were having way too many eggs and not enough sales so we were giving the dogs and pigs eggs!  So, this is a good thing.

It’s been a week now and I have to say, it’s been a blessing!  Chore time has been cut in half, the remaining 25 hens and 10 roos are happy, and our feed cost is going down.   Sometimes, one of the hardest things to do is change what you are doing.   We are so programmed to think that what we are doing this moment is what we have been doing and will be doing for the rest of time.  Guess what ?  I think if you really looked at your life, there are very few things you are doing now that you were doing a year ago, five years ago or ten years ago.   And most likely, things will keep evolving and changing in subtle ways.  It’s the way things are.  So be open for change and watchful for things that are not working well.  Changing them for the better can lighten your load and bring more contentment into your life!!!  I know it’s helping us!

Our boy Baron…

DSC_0139

It’s still sad to even write about this, but I feel I must.   Bad things happen here on our little homestead as much as the good things.    Thankfully, the bad things are not often, but still, we get them as well.  Everyone does.  This week, it was very sad.  Our sweet barn kitty boy Baron was hit by a car and killed.  Apparently, he was off visiting and wandering and made a misjudgment out front on our fairly busy road.

It’s such a rough call.   Sure, cats live long and healthy lives in our homes, away from the things that can do them harm…  cars, other animals, illness…   but yet, a cat outside is in his or her glory.  When I watch our kitties outside, on the farm, they are royalty among the other animals.  They come and go as they please.  They languish in any sunny patch of green grass or sweet warm hay they wish.   They jump fences, they climb trees, they walk on the top of roofs and laugh at us all in our routines.  Kitties outside are just the happiest things around.   I adore after a hard bit of chores to sit on a stump or a bale of hay and within a few minutes, I have a cat in my lap, purring and rubbing and wanting my attention.  I love watching them stalk imaginary things in the grass or hop around in the tall weeds to try and catch a butterfly.  I’m thankful that they keep mice out of our livestock feed and am always pleased to see them sleeping in a barn all curled up in a little feline ball.  And when they get hurt or killed, it just breaks my heart.  And I think, I have failed them.  I have let them get injured or worse on my watch.  Yet, I have also, let them live their lives the way they want.  It’s a quandary.

Let me tell you, there are few worse things in this life then to have to go out and shovel the remains of a beloved pet off a piece of black pavement.  You have to be quick, because cars and trucks are whizzing past.  And once you are done, you just feel so awful, it’s dreadful.  The image burns in your mind for days, weeks.  I gently carried his lifeless body in my big shovel to a grave out back and I sobbed like a baby, just felt so awful.  I could never ask my girls to do anything so grave, though I imagine someday, they might have to as well.   I could never leave him there, driving by would be more painful each and every day until he was no longer there.  Just sadness, much sadness.  Such that you think, I never want another cat, especially an outside cat.

But we have Duke, Baron’s brother…  There’s just no way that we could bring him inside.  He’s too wild.   He likes to pee everywhere.  He’s a free spirit and cooping him up in a house would probably make him miserable.  He seems to be much better at crossing the road.  It’s odd…  I rarely ever saw Baron leave the farm, he was a homebody.  Never saw him outfront.   Duke?  He’s back and forth and all over the place.  He’ll be gone a day or two and wander back.  He’s got a lot more street smarts, it seems, more than Baron did.   My guess, Duke will be with us a good long time, because he’s just more, well, tough and smart about bad things.   I hope so.

I think we are blessed however.   With this many animals, aside from an old hen or two, we haven’t had too many deaths this year.  All our lambs were born healthy and grew well.  We lost Grizelda…  our bunny….  and now Baron.   I guess with this many animals about, there are just bound to be a few losses.   I hope that we have no more this year.   I can’t bare to loose another pet right now.

A Big Sign Job!

DSC_0949

Maggie’s fledgling sign company is coming right along.   Slowly, at a nice pace.   Which is good because we are still learning the new machine and all the materials and programs.  Too fast and we might have some awful growing pains!   She doesn’t need to be aggressive yet, and just grow to fast.   We have some wonderful clients now and with some good word of mouth, we’re growing slowly and comfortably.

We have a great new client, Jerry’s Auto Salvage in Archbold, Ohio!  Jerry and his wife Shirley and all the guys there are just such awesome folks!  We love hanging out with them and just sharing time there.  We feel like part of the gang!  And we love that they are ready to help out with our old car Blue…  it’s just a great friendship forming.   We had a chance to do their race car a while back and that was so much fun!   We’ll be able to do more, and we have been… business cards, truck decals…  a tshirt design in the works and a couple big signs!

Of course, around here… there are always animal supervisors!  Luna and Lilly were right in the middle of it all, and Ratchet and Evee are hanging around underfoot as we start to assemble the sign!  DSC_0956

This was a big 4 foot by 8 foot sign for the side of their building!  Fun stuff…   Lots of vinyl to cut and weed.   DSC_0959

Jessy let a hand in helping because it was a many hour adventure!  DSC_0961

I love how she’s eager to help Maggie grow her business, just like Maggie has spent many years bagging rocks when needed and helping to grow Jessy’s business!   Such great girls…

I goofed up the 9 in the 419 area code!  We had to recut it.   Bad Mom…   haha….  it just got away from me and wrinkled badly…  DSC_0965

Can’t wait to see it up and on the building!  Maggie did a great job of painting in the comical tow truck for the corner!   Yes, it’s very much like the movie character and we are in the works to design a brand new only-for-Jerry tow truck!  He’s got a truck that is just like that character and it’s a bit of an icon for him!  All his grandkids think it’s the tow truck from the movie and he’s got a lot of memorabilia about that character.  However, he’d like to make sure that he has his own identity and very soon he will!  We’ll be doing several other signs for him…  and it’s going to be so much fun to see them up and around town!  Way to go Maggie!!!
