Pig Update…

IMG_1999

Well, little Meyer, one of our meat pigs, wasn’t doing that well.  He was the smaller of the duo, Oscar and Meyer and when Ebony came back, he was really the odd man out.  Oscar is big enough that he got over Ebony’s tough exterior and just pushed his way into the food line.  But Meyer was now getting bossed around by both Oscar and Ebony and he was not getting much food!  Jessy started calling him skinny pig and unfortunately, the name fits!

We just couldn’t let that go on…  So, we divised a quick and easy plan to separate Meyer from his hoggish pen partners and give him his own deluxe suite in the big barn.  We had some chainlink panels from a dog kennel in there, but we found out that hogs can push through that pretty easily…  (Ebony????  Bad girl…)  So we had to buy a hog panel at the feed store.  They are built tough and strong, welded wire and ready for hogs.  Hence the name… hog panel.

Unfortunately, they come 16 feet long!  So we took a measurement and our bolt cutters and we cut that bad boy off at 12 foot and lashed it on top of ol’ Blue.  It was only hanging off the back a wee bit!  We didn’t have too far to go.

Then we just removed the chainlink panel and popped this one in place.  A little wire later and poof!  New piggy stall for Meyer!

And if you can sort of make out…   we just opened up the little gate on the left hand side of the above picture and I went in and grabbed ahold of the little skinny pig and pretty much hopped him out of the big pen.  He then ran into the other pen and Jessy shut the panel up and wired it shut.  If we need to go in there, we can, he’s really quite the scaredy pig.

I went in the house and made him a special welcome to your own room treat feast.   A whole loaf of bread, 6 eggs, an old ear of corn, two yellow squash cut up, some potato peelings and a big dollop of black strap molasses with a half a quart of slightly aged milk.   Hog heaven!  He got it poured in his slop bucket and you never saw a more happy hog in your life!  He was grunting and squealing, eating away, licking his chops and just feet first in his food and happy as you can imagine!

Ebony and Oscar grunted unhappily from the adjoining pen… watching and slightly annoyed.  Hey, if they had been good pigs and shared, we wouldn’t have had to move him and they would be partaking in the delightful mash.

We will give him a little extra mash treat for a few days, get him back up to happy hog status.  Along with his normal hog chow.  We feel a little bad that he was loosing weight, and we didn’t notice right away.  It’s amazing how fast they put on weight and also take it off!  Oscar is getting quite big… just in the month that he’s been here.  It’s pretty obvious that he gets his full share as well as a bit more!

Meyer will catch up.  Even if Oscar ends up going to camp alone, we can always keep Meyer a bit longer so he can get to a good hanging weight.  He’s a good pig…

IMG_2005_2

And look at our little Ebony!  Someone is starting to look a little tubby around the middle!  I would have to say for certain that we’ll have piglets sooner than later!  She’s about 6 weeks out, as our best estimate for farrowing.  Maybe a bit more.   We’ll be on piglet watch  from about October 1st on. I’ve noticed that she’s been favoring that back corner of the barn, rooting about and testing the area for a nest spot.  I’m going to get her a few straw bales so she can make herself a nice little secuded area.  Oscar will be vacating the pen in another month or so.  I’m hoping he can move back in with Meyer, once Meyer gets a growing time in.  Or we’ll move Ebony into Meyer’s stall and move Meyer back with Oscar!  Oh my… it’s always someone moving here and there!  Adjustments are the name of the game!

Just found a cool pedigree and livestock tracking program and we’re giving it a spin to see if we like it.   It’s called Kintraks and you can download it at www.Kintraks.com   It’s a shareware database program.  What I like so far is that you can create several different breed databases… so you can have goats and sheep and pigs and rabbits all in one place.  I like that.  Going to keep playing with it a bit, and see what we discover!  How we like it and all that.  Want to be ready when we have our first litter of little American hogs!  We are going to name the first batch after presidents and first ladies!  Each of our litters are going to have an American theme…  like presidents, then capital cities, then national parks, then landmarks and so on!  We thought that would be a fun way to mix it up.  I know lots of people name in session based on the alphabet, but I think it would be more fun to have themes for litters and seasons.   Like our lambs this year were all hillbilly names from the Foxfire books!  Next year, they are going to be bluegrass musicians!  I believe the year after we are considering Lord of the Ring names…  The bunnies are all named after characters from video game series!  Imagine that.  Not sure about the goats yet….  Milk goats are going to be botanical names most likely and the angoras…  Turkish names!

Should be fun!  :-)

Family and Friend Visits!

IMG_1882

We had a wonderful week last week…  just getting around to writing all about it.  Our Uncle Mark and his son Wesley came out to see Grandpa Bucka in Detroit and really wanted to come down and spend the day at the farm.  Wesley was so excited to see the place and his cousins!  I thought it would be wonderful.  I haven’t seen Mark since the divorce and had never met his son!  Very special…  They live in San Francisco, so it’s not that often that they get out this way!

Look closely…  do you see what I see?   Yes… it’s MAGGIE!!!  Standing on her own, without crutches!!!  She has been given the green light of A-Okness…  Dr McKernan said she has healed up wonderfully and she is done!  She has one more week to use just one crutch and work into walking on her own.  She can stand without assistance as long as it doesn’t hurt.  And it doesn’t!  Happy day!

IMG_1883

Poor Cody.  Some camera angles make him look so SMALL!  haha…  He’s a stallion you know, a huge tough stud pony!  Yeah…  right… haha…  okay, he’s a big mush baby, but still… he is taller than 24 inches…

Wes and Cody were a big hit.  Cody likes kids, he really does.  And is a very good boy about being led all over the place and watching out for busy boys that move fast!  Just such a good boy…  All the critters like kids, for the most part.  Sometimes they have to take a bit to watch and see if they want to get too close…  but they sure like watching them run about the place!  So much more fun then us old ladies… haha…

IMG_1885

Buttercup and Daisy are our official tree climbing goat buddies for all kids that come to the farm!  They love it… and the kids love it.  They spent a lot of time climbing the windchime tree and enjoying it’s big old broad branches.

Is it okay to say I love a tree?  Because I love that tree.

IMG_1886 IMG_1887

And the goats adored playing on their playground with Wesley!  I believe he wouldn’t mind moving in here.  Haha…. we wouldn’t mind!  I think this place would be fantastic for kids full time.  He was playing with the chickens, chasing roosters, hanging out with Cody and the goats and sheep and just pretty much having a good time.  We put him to work feeding pigs and gathering eggs and harvesting stuff from the garden!

IMG_1888 IMG_1889

Daisy was happy that he was gonna take a little nap out there, because that is Daisy’s favorite thing to do… nap!  We don’t call her lazy Daisy for no reason!  Actually, Wes has a young chicken with him, that was pretty funny.  They were following him around so he just had one with him most the day.

We had such a nice visit, it was wonderful.  Had a nice big lunch spread of BBQ chicken and Maggie’s potato salad and other goodies from the farm!  Tried to get a fire going but it was kind of a dud!  I think our wood was a bit too damp!   Still… hey, it was a fun day!!!  We hope to see them again sooner than later!

IMG_1891

Then, later that week, on Friday, we wanted to go and visit our friend Mary at her garage sale!  And of course, to see her animals!  Aren’t these baby goats adorable???  I have to say, I believe that our little pair, Daisy and Buttercup, helped to convince Mary to get these little sweet nuggets!!!  The are just adorable!

IMG_1897

We met Mary through our homesteading clan!  And she brought her bunny WIllow over to breed with our stud bunny Cornelius.   She had two darling little bunnies…  June Bug and Molly!  Sweet French Angora bunnies!  Everyone is doing great!

IMG_1901

Mary raises alpacas for their fiber and they are pretty neat.   I have to say I don’t think we’ll be adding any to our flock at this point, but they are pretty neat to be around… so weird, yet so beautiful!  I like their colors… reminds me of the possibilities of our Shetland sheep!

IMG_1910

She also has a llama… and his name is Spirit…  he is beautiful too!  I love this shot, showing big Spirit and one of the little goaties!!!  Huge difference, eh?  Actually I was a little surprised at how large a llama is!  As tall as a horse really!

IMG_1913

IMG_1916

I’m hoping that Spirit doesn’t take this moment to spit at me!  haha….  Mary says that he’s a good boy and doesn’t spit.. but that occasionally the alpacas do!

IMG_1929

Awww… this is Henry, their Great Pyrenees livestock guardian dog!  He was HUGE, but really sweet.  I do believe he would scare off anything that wanted to bother the darling little alpacas!

IMG_1927

Love the coloring on the tri-color doe!  I believe they call this moon spotted…  very pretty.   The little carmel doe is darling as well!  They are Dwarf Nigerians…  still quite young little gals!

IMG_1925 IMG_1924Aww… aren’t they weirdly cute?  Love their haircuts… they have such beautiful fiber!  Mary brought me over a lovely  bag of their last haircut and I can’t wait to get a little time and try spinning it!!!  Very pretty stuff…

We had a nice visit for sure and we got a hammock!!!  Yes!   At her sale… we are going to give it a good home… our old one finally rotted away… this one is beautiful green and made of a bit tougher stuff…  can’t wait to get it strung and enjoy it for a little bit longer!

What a nice week of visits…  it’s always neat to go and see other people’s farms and how they do things!  Gives me ideas for our own little place… and it’s just fun to visit!  Can’t wait to go back and visit again soon!

Blue has a day at the car spa!

photo-1

One of the nice things about doing graphic arts and signs and such for clients is that they become like buddies and we help each other out.  When Jerry heard that we were going up north for our friend Sarah’s wedding, he said, we better give Blue a good check up.  He knew that she needed a coolant flush (because they fixed the cracked reservoir that was leaking a wee bit and I had been putting water in because I didn’t want coolant all over the driveway…)  ((It’s very dangerous for animals… and yet they love it!))

So, of course, how could I refuse?   I got a gallon of coolant, a quart of oil, two cans of air conditioning recharge and a box of donuts for the guys!  We were ready for spa day!!!

photo-3

I’m always a bit leary when you put a 17 year old car up on a lift and start looking for trouble.  Haha… the whole car is trouble!  Well, not really, Blue is an awesome old lady.  Still… she’s 17 years old!  But up she went and they got started on inspecting her.

photo-2

As you can see, Mia, the shop dog, was very very concerned.  Very.

photo-9

Up she goes and Steve, wonder mechanic, starts to check her over.

Well, she’s rusty underneath…  not surprising, Ford product.  They discover that the footwell  on the driver side is really soft…  It’s going to need a tin plate put in there sooner than later or I’ll have a Flintstone car.  I make a mental note to not push tooooo hard on the floor!!!

But her springs and struts and all those wheel things are in good shape.  The exhaust is in really good shape and it’s original!  Yah Ford!

They decide they don’t like the back tires.  Jerry’s got a donor car out in the lot that we’ve been taking parts off for Blue.  It’s got good back tires on it, so he sends Floyd out to fetch them.  Gosh…  wow…

photo-5

They set her down and start to flush the coolant and clean her up.  Get the engine running.  All of the guys listen and putter and agree, she’s running awesomely.  She’s got a strong engine, sounds good, runs smooth.  It’s going to last easily another 20 to 30 thousand miles with care.  That’s a huge relief!  For us, that’s another 3 or 4 years!!!  (We don’t really drive that much)  But then they hear a little squeek…  and start to investigate while Steve is doing the coolant flush.  It might be the alternator!  Oh no!!!

But nope… it’s just the alternator pulley!!!  Oh good!!!  Floyd goes back out to the donor car and returns with a nice stainless steel plated pulley, an upgrade to the black plastic one of Blues!  Steve gets that in place pretty quick and she’s quiet as a kitten again!  Whew…

photo-8

Nice new used tires!  Thank you donor car!!!!

Well, they get her all done up and oh, yes, filled up the air conditioning…  that is nice and got the driver side window working again…  they know just where to hit that door panel to giggle that dumb motor!!!   And Steve removed that darn mangled up heat shield that came partially loose and was making so much noise as we drove!  Wow…  I’m so excited and so thankful when he says, now, get outta here before I write up a bill!  I pull that happy old car out of the bay, thanking them all profusely and as I turn the wheel to drive away, there is this loud and unhappy sound…  I stop… the boys are hollaring for me to stop and they are out there checking it.  Oh no…

photo-6

Back on the lift she goes…  oh no…  turns out that the noisy heat shield was covering up the sound of wheel bearings going bad!!!!  Oh my gosh…  I’m getting worried.  That sounds expensive.  We make a deal for a bit of signage and I buy the parts.  A deal!  Parts cost $94 but heck, that’s a deal compared to all they have done to this old car!

It takes a while.  I start helping out by answering the phones and talking with customers so they can get Blue done.  They are a little short staffed because one of the other mechanics broke his wrist and is off for a week or so.  I don’t mind at all, it’s kind of fun.  It’s a Friday afternoon now, and getting kind of slow anyway.  Jerry’s son is working on his race car in the next bay over and that’s pretty interesting.  Blue and I have now been here for 8 hours.  Can you only imagine what the labor charge should be for 8 hours of work????   These men are angels and this is such a blessing.  They don’t want anything to be wrong for our trip, they know it’s important.

I’m beginning to think that we have opened up a HUGE can of worms and Blue is getting mighty comfortable with all this male attention.  Being the car of a bunch of girls, well, she doesn’t always get the right attention…  we try, but well, never really knew how to do car repairs much more than the basics and such.  Now, she’s getting a ton of attention!

6:30 in the evening rolls around and they are done.  She’s ready.  They take her for a spin, test her out and declare her road ready and in tip top shape!  I am so happy.  Ended up costing about $130 for the parts, coolant and air conditioning recharge.  And donuts.   Which they all loved.

(Who doesn’t love donuts?  I mean, common….  donuts? Yeah….)

Well, to make a long story longer… old Blue gets us to the wedding on time.  In one piece.  We are happy.  Sarah and Brad are a beautiful pair of youngins and the ceremony is lovely. Of course, from the church to the reception… we hear this weird noise… up front… oh no!  Not a flat, but it seems like the front passenger tire is a little weird, but maybe I’m just seeing things…  It drives okay, but something is weird…   We limp home via a slower highway, because I’m thinking if there is something wrong with the tire, I’d rather not blow it out at a high speed.   But of course, Blue gets us home and nothing seems amiss, other than the weird noise.

I had to go back over to Jerry’s that Monday and of course, they wanted to know how the wedding was and how Blue did.  I feel so sheepish to have to say, something is weird up front.  They are amazed and Steve takes her for a spin…   brakes.  OH NO!  haha…  just starting to make a little noise from wearing down!   We were so worried that it was something big deal…  Steve says get a pair and I’ll change them.  So now, she’s got new brake pads, coolant flush, new wheel bearings, changed alternator pulley, two new used tires on the back, no more heat shield foolishness, ah…. air conditioning recharge, window working, oil and fluids topped off and I’m out about $150 bucks.  And a cool decal for the back of Jerry’s truck!   My gosh…  I am so sure that we got the way better side of this bargain!  I am so thankful, I could almost cry, it’s just such a wonderful blessing and frankly, a huge relief off my back to know that Blue is finally all ready for another couple months without much left to go wrong!!!  Of course, a 17 year old car can always find something to throw, but I feel so much more relieved knowing that Jerry and Steve are on duty and keeping her awesome and loved.

They laughed when I was taking pictures through the day… but I told them… Blue’s got a fan club and an online presence.  She is beloved as the Windhaven chariot…  It’s gonna be a sad day when she becomes a donor car in the back 40 at Jerry’s place!!!

Hopefully, not for another 30,000 miles, though!!!!
