It was a dark and stormy night…

I was just about to head for bed when the dogs started to act weird.  Growling, pacing and just not happy with something outside.  I turned off my music, and listened…  and yep, something is not right in the yard.  It’s something animal sounding, like something attacking or fighting…  just not good.

Nevermind that it’s 2 am and I’m in my jammies…  but around here, jammies are a nice wool skirt and a worn t-shirt and hoodie!   Time’s a wasting and someone might be in trouble, so there’s no time to pick out something more suitable!

Well… got my shoes and my whacking stick. (not a shotgun, but just a nice sturdy herding, walking, pointing, whacking and all purpose hard sturdy stick…) and a flashlight… and the dogs. Let them out in the dog yard and they are strangely very quiet. They know somethings out there too. Instead of being insane goofballs, they are running about, sniffing and all quiet. Not good.

I walk over near the garden and poultry barn because that is where I thought I heard the noises from my office… something fighting or in distress, something not right. I check and all the roosters are in the barn, snoozing away in their little bachelor clutch. It’s kind of funny, during the day they all have their zones and there’s no mixing but at night, they all roost together. Guess they know there’s strength and safety in numbers.

Something bumps into my back and nearly gives me a heart attack and it’s Cody Pony. He is like a ninja pony in the dark, I swear! I probably make too much noise as it is, talking to the roosters and urging the dogs to check out the yard for me. Cody is not puzzled why I’m out here, you can see it on his face, he is concerned. He stays close behind me, bumping me with his soft nose to stay in touch with me.

I’m not fooled by his cranky old man pony routine, he really is very alert and watchful over HIS herd of small hooved peeps. He may not have a band of shaggy little Shetland mares out on the highlands and moors, but he takes his shaggy little ewes and lambs very seriously. The goats are on their own, however.

Within a few moments Buttercup and Daisy are trotting over, roused from their slumber spots out in the middle yard with the sheep. I shine the light out and see all nine sheep in a big circle, laying down and just waiting out the long night. I hear coyotes in the distance, quite loud tonight and I’m sure that is part of the noise I must have heard. You can tell with every yip and yap and howl from the coyote party way out in the woods that the animals here are just a little nervous and wary. They know their song means death.

We check on the couple chickens and hogs in the big barn. Ebony and Oscar are awake and grunting soft piggy grunts at me, wondering if they are going to get some special late night snack. I don’t see Meyer and get a little worried until a pile of hay wiggles and he lifts his snout with a questioning grunt! Haha… he’s already made himself a hole and filled his nest with straw. Pigs are funny. Everyone is accounted for, so we move on.

Duke Kitty has joined the late night parade as we wander through the homestead, checking out each group and doing headcounts. Everyone seems fine, just on alert. And then I hear it… the sound I heard in the house, muffled and what got the dogs all upset. Coons fighting. Way way out at the edge of the woodlot. Probably fighting over territory, who knows. I just know it’s coons by their skittery high noise and also hear a lot of brush and such getting knocked around.

They seem totally interested in their battle and it doesn’t seem that they are coming up near the barns. Hopefully my presence this evening will keep them away. We haven’t had any coon attacks since spring, but I think I’m going to suggest to Maggie that she might want to put out her trap and see what we might catch. Just don’t want to take any chances. Jessy saw a big possum a few evenings ago, and we think it might be in the attic of our garage! I suspect he might be stealing eggs because something tried to get Lizzy, our broody hen and smashed up all her clutch of eggs a few nights ago! She’s okay, but she’s roosting way up high again with the others and has been cured of her broody behavior…

I head back to the house with my Barney Fife gang of farmyard deputies. I stop at the screen porch door to hand out lots of pats and rubs to my fearless bunch and then get the dogs and head inside for a cup of hot cocoa and a facebook and blog report. All is well, for now. It’s bedtime!!!!

Still here…

DSC_0569

Sorry for being a little distant the last week or so.

The girls and I realized that we needed to get busy and make a little extra cash.  The summer is always hard on us, sales tend to be a little low and well, if we’re not careful, our budget gets stretched very thin.

So, rather than worry and wring our hands, we sat down and said, let’s put a good hard 15 days into the mix and just stay super focused on the tasks at hand, stay positive and get as much done as we can.

I’m happy to report that it has certainly returned to us ten-fold.  Being positive… heck, faking it till you make it, is one way to just keep your head afloat and hang in there.  We noticed that sales increased…  we turned to eBay to get rid of a few things that helped us to keep the lights on and food in the pantry…  and we networked and prayed and just stayed on track and on task.  I got a new client and two returning clients needed some good graphics done.  So, we’re pretty busy right now, but I am happy to report that we got through the worse of the tight budget and things are looking up.

Maggie is now walking on her own, no more crutches!  It’s been about a week and she’s doing great.  She tires a little bit, but each day, she’s stronger and happier.  It’s really been great that she can take on a few more chores each day and be back out with her beloved critters and farm work.  She’s positively glowing with cheerfulness.

Jessy really stepped up to the plate, learning how to do eBay sales and managing all that for the last fortnight.  Since she’s already our computer geek and mailing diva, she stepped right into that role and got it all going for us!  The two also managed to sell a few large collections of Maggie’s childhood toys to earn enough for a new larger vinyl cutter for Maggie’s business!  We will be ordering it tomorrow and boy, am I proud of the two of them.  It’s wonderful to see your children mature and grow towards their goals and aspirations!!!

Me, well, I’ve gotten back on the graphic artist bandwagon after a year or so of light duty.  I guess after 35 years of working in print, type and ink, I needed a little break.   The farm was such a lifetime goal, that I really wanted to immerse myself in it’s day to day workings and it’s blossoming from the foreclosure days.  But, I’m also seeing that it needs me to stay focused as well on various tasks at hand… However, I see now that the break was a good thing as I’ve come back into my career with renewed vigor and excitement!  I love doing work for my client friends…  I rarely have a client that doesn’t end up a good friend and that is the best part of what I do.

We’re wrapping up a few things and getting our noodles around this slight change in our routine.  So, please don’t worry if you see us missing a day or two.   You can always check our Facebook farm page which seems to be a little easier for us to update with little drive-by bits through the day.   If you need your WIndhaven fix, be sure to check out our Facebook page…

In the meanwhile…  I am very excited to say that I’ve been squeezing in some work on my hopeful book…  I’ve always wanted to write a real substantial tome on well, life as a urban/rural homesteading single mom…  and I finally put fingers to keys and got started.  I managed to get my working outline finished and my brain as been thinking about just what I plan to write about whenever it gets a wee moment to do so!  I really don’t plan to write just some boring basic DIY manual, but more, rather a resource/memoir/story/help guide on how things work for us.  We’ll have to see how it all turns out.  It will be hefty, that’s for sure and I hope just a shade unique!

Of course, that’s what all writers hope for when they write their masterpiece!

The critters are all fine, happy in the last throes of summer and looking forward to the fall.  Our American Guinea Hog, Ebony, is getting fat and soon to be a mom!  We expect her piglets sometime in the first of October, which is so quickly creeping up around the corner!  The sheep are getting a little randy and thinking about love as well.  It’s fun to see them scamper about in the early morning chill, frolicking and acting goofy in the brisk morning light.  The seasons are definitely working on a wardrobe change and I for one am quite happy!  I love fall, it’s one of my favorite times of the year.   Spring is a close second!   I can’t wait for us to wrap up a few more loose ends and then take a little time off this weekend to go and play outside a WHOLE BUNCH!

Until then…  don’t worry!  We’re here… just trying to be good girls and get ready for the fall!

The Memory Hutch…

DSC_0444

Early this week, we were gifted with a family treasure.

Steve, the girls’s dad, just moved to a new home and well, apparently it didn’t quite fit into he and his girlfriend’s decorating plans and he asked if the girls wanted this lovely old hutch that belonged to their great grandparents, Fabian and Eleanor.  Of course, they said yes!   They love beautiful old wooden pieces…  and so, this old hutch came out to the homestead.

For a few days, it was in the studio, but we knew that was not the place for it.    So Monday we moved it around and did a little rearranging to make it fit into our living room.

Being that we have a 115 year old farmhouse, that is multi-generational and has been added on to, our living room is right in the middle of the house.  And unfortunately, is dark having no windows to the outside and has 7 different openings to other places in the house.  Combined with super tall ceilings, this is one awkward room!!!

But we’ve been working with it, and it’s comfy, just still feels a little weird.  We really don’t watch TV much so no one really spends much time in there.  Ultimately, it would be nice to take and open up one of the walls to the outer room so that we can have more room and more light!  But that is something we don’t feel comfortable just knocking out walls without a bit more guidance as to what might be load bearing and all that structural engineering thing and all.

So, we’re stuck with sort of making it work.

Lilly Kitty loves the picture of Mary being escorted away from Calvary, a beautiful old lithograph that we just love…  so pretty and so mournful… we had it hanging where the hutch went, and I need to rehang it…  (Actually, Lilly was fascinated by a little moth that had slipped in the house!)

This is from the studio entrance…  we got that lovely big entertainment center for free off Craigslist!   Love it.  It’s actually very nice, a sort of cherrywood color that is pretty close to the family hutch!

Okay, I am side tracked!   We got this hutch and so we were coming home and I got the idea that we should make it a memory or heritage hutch!   We will start to add our own little heirloom pieces and such into it’s cabinets and then use the top cabinet as a display area for small pieces, photos and such.  Isn’t that a cool idea?  We really don’t need more storage, not really, but then collecting some special things in there just really seems to make perfect sense!  Can’t wait to get started finding the right things to go in there.

We love that it compliments our other maternal great grandmother’s beautiful wood and marble table that my Dad brought to us a couple summers ago!  Windhaven is becoming the family museum place and we don’t mind at all!   We love stuff like that.

Okay… I do need some help though.  Suggestions???  What do we do with this room?

We love the green… it’s a sort of nice natural modern green, sort of celery?  Or light a bright sage.. I dunno… but we like that.  Goes with the wood and our amber lights, and brown and beige tones of the piece and such.  But what we have trouble with is a.) the very tall walls….  b.) the lack of natural light and c.) the multiple openings and such.

Any suggestions?

We’re not really into a lot of doo-dads and such, or really boarders…  but the room just feels well, awkward.  It’s not that comfortable.  It’s hard to set up the furniture without blocking some pathway.   I don’t mind blocking off the bedrooms to a degree, since we don’t go back there over and over.   But we do go from the studio to the office and then into the dining room a lot.

We’re probably going to paint the floor soon, a light color.  Maybe a light brown.  To help reflect some light.  I thought that crown molding might act to finish the ceiling a bit more and bring it down a bit.  That neat lightweight foam molding is very very reasonable.  We’re not set with the furniture in the places they are… but not sure how to move them around.  Thought about putting the entertainment center on the wall that the couch is on, but well, not sure if that will help anything.

Help!!!  (gg)  Any suggestions would be welcome!!!

Maybe I’ll try and get a drawing of the house done and you can see our traffic circle dilemma!!!
