Princess Galadriel…

DSC_0005

The very next day, Sunday, June 27th, our good friends Jess and Erin were coming out to visit the farm for the first time and to take Howdy, the Angora buck back home!   Long story, coming soon to the blog.   Well, we know them over the internet and Jess is my weaving mentor and my livestock sister in arms!   We love to chat on Facebook and are both rather new to all this, so we share many a tale and question back and forth every day, just about.

I was telling her about Iris, my cream ewe that is so HUGE with babies…  I just hoped that she would lamb soon because she was just so huge and uncomfortable!  Jess laughs and says she will be bringing her good momma birthing juju to the farm on their visit!  Yeah!   How cool…

Well, she was right.  Just wrong ewe!!!

They no sooner get here and we’re chatting and looking around the house and decide to head out and see the animals and get the tour.  We walk to the paddock and it is so apparent that little Emma, my brown yearling is in labor, in the yard and is in distress.  She’s bawling and confused and got a leg sticking out and it’s just not going well.   So my Jessy and I, we gather her up carefully, and take her into the lambing jug so the rest of the noisy herd will give her a little breathing room.   I swear, they were all standing around like it was a traffic accident during rush hour and not helping our little girl at all!

It was a tough delivery, the little lamb was malpositioned and it was apparent that we were going to have to assist.  Time to get the sterile gloves and lube ready and towels and such.   Jessy is such a good helper, she’s really gotten good at not freaking out and being calm and careful.   She is my nurse and so very helpful.  I checked over our WONDEFUL Storey Press Barn Guide to Sheep, and determined that it was not too bad, but that it seemed one foreleg had folded and gotten wedged.   I could see her little nose, but just one leg.   The book advised to just slowly and carefully, between contractions, to push the lamb backwards a wee bit, and that the leg should pop forward into the right position.   And I’ll be danged, it did.  Whew!  Then everything went so much smoother.   Emma calmed down immediately and took a little breather.  Problem was that the lamb had broken the membrane around her nose struggling and now she was back inside and could possibly drown!

So with the very next contraction, I tried to help the little diver out so that we could at least get her nose and mouth out.  In the proper position, baby lambs look like little high divers…  their heads should be tucked between their front legs and they look like they are diving out of their mommas…   My heart sank when I found the baby unresponsive, and then her little tongue was blue!  She was dying…   it was not good.  Emma was tired, we were worried and with the help of Jessy, we ended up pulling the lamb with the next contraction.   Jessy got busy immediately with wiping and trying to get the baby to breath.   A beautiful little girl!  We had to suck out her mouth and then all the sudden she gasped this huge gasp and started to breath!   Oh my gosh…  what a miracle moment.  It was just all the more special that our friends were there to cheer and record it as well, and offer encouragement.  This is all still fairly new to us and last year all the births were just sooooo easy and without much difficulty at all!  But this little princess just wanted to make it a drama filled event!

Welcome to little Princess Galadriel…  our first girl lamb born this 2014 season.   Isn’t she amazing!  Oh my gosh…  her father is Otis, our yearling ram whom unfortunately passed away a month ago in an accident.  Now, he has several beautiful lambs on the ground and his lovely genes will carry on!

But this is the first of his daughters…  and oh my gosh, she’s stunning!  She is a yarn store in one fleece!  Look at those beautiful darks and browns and lights…. just a beautiful little baby!

Little Aragorn is happy that there is another lamb for him to hang out with!  Of course, he’s waiting for his love Arwyn to be born…  maybe soon?

Prince Aragorn is Born…

DSC_0878

Wow, am I behind on posting!  I’m sorry about that.   It’s the spring and it seems that every day is full of projects and things going on, that once I sit down in the evening, I’m likely to just fall asleep in my chair!  I actually have 18 folders of pictures to get caught up on!!!

As you might have heard on our facebook page for the farm…  we’ve been having babies!  Yes!   Lambs and one goat baby!  (So far…)

Let me introduce to you, the first baby lamb born this 2014 lambing season at Windhaven!

Little Prince Aragorn of WIndhaven!

Yes, we have decided to have a Lord of the Rings theme for our sheep babies this year.  If you’ve been reading our little tale, you know that we like to name groups of animals in a theme, partially because it’s fun but also because it allows us to know when the animal was born.  So this year all our little lambs are going to be LOTR royalty!

Frankly, I was very surprised to find this little baby all beautiful and born one Sunday morning!  I had been waiting on Iris, our lovely ewe, who is HUGE and well, if I was a betting woman, I would have bet she would be the first.   Noel looked pregnant and we were putting her in the lambing jug at eveningfall, but she just wasn’t as ready looking.   Fooled me!   I went out there to check on everyone and there was no babies…  I had to rush off to the junk yard and take care of some race cars that needed vinyl work, so I checked, then dashed in the house to tell Jessy that I was leaving and to keep an eye on the ewes…

Well, a hour later, Jessy goes out and there is little baby Aragorn!   All dried off and standing.   That Noel must have seen me leave and went into labor.   Sheep are so sneaky!   Actually, we’ve only seen two births!   They usually have them all by themselves and quickly.  Very little fuss.

Aragorn is so striking….  I just love his coloring.   I hope he stays mottled like that.   He’s beautiful.   His momma is a black Welsh Mountain Sheep…  and his daddy was Harley, our Shetland ram.  So he’s the only cross bred little boy of the bunch.  I plan to keep him, and to whether him so he can stay with the flock and his momma.  He’s that striking!   How beautiful his fleece will be, I think it would mix to make a beautiful grey and black mixture!

Momma and son stayed together in the lambing barn for the day and then the next morning, we let them out to meet everyone.  It’s always a good thing to keep ewes with their lambs in what is called a “lambing jug” for 24-48 hours, just to make sure the baby is nursing well, and so they can bond very closely.  I like to keep the first timers in for two days because they sometimes need a little recovery time to get it in their heads that they are now mommas!   But this is Noel’s third year birthin’ youngins, so she’s a pro.  And she is one tough mudder!    Nothing comes between her and her boy!

Just a cute little picture of Jelly Bean…  he’s teeny tiny, don’t you think?  Chickens are bigger than he is!  He is such a funny little boy.  We just love him.  He’s definitely staying here at the farm.  He can earn his keep with that delicious lovely fiber he’s growing!   He’s just perfect and everything I hoped for with his breeding.   He is a pygora cross goatling.  Since his daddy is a type A pygora  (the most mohairlike of pygora goats), I am hoping that Jelly Bean will retain that beautiful curly Angora coat as he matures.  Looks like he will so far!  DSC_0976 IMG_2873

Oh how cute this little lamb is!   He’s adorable…  And he lets us hold him…  a bit.   Many lambs are pretty skittish but he’s pretty confident about people and that is so nice.   He’s a bruiser!   I thought Noel might have twins like last year, but nope…  just this big oaf of a baby prince!!!

Now Jelly Bean has someone to play with!   In a few days…

New Lambs!!!!

Harley’s first born babies are finally here!  Of course, not to our ewes but to our friend’s ewes that he bought bred from us last fall!   Miss Ivy has delivered two beautiful, darling little ewe lambs!!!   Oh my gosh, we had to rush over and see them…  a beautiful deep brown and a little tri colored girl!!!  OH MY GOSH…  now we are soooo excited for our own babies to be born!  Soon!!!

Of course, we had to bring the camera and take some pictures of his little homestead and all their critters too!  Such fun!  We hardly want to ever leave our little paradise, but it’s so nice to be able to go and see other folks as they make their own lovely places to call home!!!
