Drum Roll Please…..

62 pounds of produce!!!!!

YEAH!!!

I don’t think I’ll make it to the 100 pound mark because all I have left are a couple pumpkins (2) and a pair of watermelon, small.. and one apple. And about oh 20 or so ears of sweet corn… maybe another 10 pounds of tomatoes left on the vine… well… maybe…. fall crops of peas and broccolli are doing pretty well. I’m sure I’ll get to 80 but 100 might be pushing it!

Next year though… watch out!!! Once I plant the RIGHT things in the RIGHT places, it’s going to be awesome!

And if I get the little apple trees to do good next year, that will really help out with the load of good eats off the Moby farm!

I think I’m going to be buying a few more fruit trees. They have them on sale at Lowes… $12 a tree. I figure, that’s not too bad. I want a trio of cherry trees! My girls are excited about that because they love all things Japanese and well, cherry blossoms are a big deal, so of course, they are excited by this. I want to plant trees, but only trees that provide something useful like a fruit!

Of course, that being said… they do have redbud trees too… and I might have to get a pair of them. They are my most favorite tree in the world. I had a beautiful old one in my house that I lost… and come spring that redbud was so beautiful. My three little shrubs in the front of the Moby are not doing well. In fact, they are looking pretty bad. I think I might move them to the south side and see if they can hide the meters and such, and get a pair of the redbuds for each corner of the front of the Moby. They will grow up nice, and shade the front, and bloom so pretty… We’ll see. I might be doing the tree of the week club for a few weeks until they are gone!!! Or maybe the pair of trees of the week club… hmmmm…

Well the girls are gone for the weekend, hanging out at their Dads. And I really didn’t have anything that I HAD to do, so I decided to tackle some gardening that I needed to do.

Been a little overwhelmed the last couple weeks with starting college and the K12 online program with Maggie, and just getting back into the swing of things for fall. Had an Opry and then some gigs, just had a lot on my plate. But thankfully, got pretty caught up by the end of the week and today was a great day to spend it outside working.

Bella was visiting so I had two doggie girls to keep me company and they were pretty good at sticking around as I weeded and picked stuff and pulled dead vine and then mowed and swept and just basically gave the place a good going over. It was hard work, took me almost 5 hours to complete, but by the time it was done, it looked wonderful. I almost filled up the whole compost bin with all my garden stuff and dead sunflower stalks and vines and all! Will have to go and push it all down good in a day or two once it dries up some and settles a bit.

I pulled all my radish… what a disapointment! No a single one was radishy!!! The were all huge top growth and like red skinny roots. None were round or globey. NONE! And they’ve been in the ground now for like 4 months! It’s a good thing that I don’t really like radishes. I just grew them because I remember them being so easy to grow and fast and fun as a kid. I wanted my girls to see how fast they would grow! HAHAHA…. now I imagine something went wrong. My carrots are the same way. They are hardly doing wonderfully. In fact most are about a pinkie size and girth at BEST.

Combined with my poor potato crop… and my gourd and squash and pumpkin low yeilds, I just think there must be something lacking from my beds this year as well as some sunlight issues.

Peppers.. beans… peas…. broccoli…. tomatoes… sunflowers…. ah, they all did WONDERFULLY!

And my corn should do pretty well… I accidently knocked down a corn plant when I was pulling weeds and radish, so I figured it was a good time to check how my little ears are doing! And looooook!!!! They are about half done!!! I’ll bet you can eat them now, some of them. If I really wanted to. But I think I’ll let them going as long as I can. I think we’ve got at least another two weeks to go. I’m going to keep them super hydrated and hope they really fill out nice.

Next year, I’m definately going to plant my corn earlier and more of it. It’s one thing that my girls love as much as I. I’m not going to waste time or space on things that we really don’t eat much of, or that are too big and huge and all that. No more pumpkins and other gourds. We don’t eat them, and to be honest, just for decorative sake… I can get a little bag at the farmer’s market come that season and then use our garden space for more of what we DO like!

Overall, I’m really tickled at the yield and the experimentation of this first year Moby garden! I definitely want to add a few more raised beds before next year… and the trio of cherry trees!

Oh, an of course… more bulbs!!! You can’t have enough spring bulb flowers telling you that winter is done!!! Ah! More gardening… just a little bit more!!!
