Foggy Spring Morning…

DSC_0889

One of the lovely rituals of lambing season and the spring is that we have to go and check on the ladies of the field often.  And early!  I’ve been going out in the early morning, usually between 6:30 and 8:00 am to check and make sure if any new lambs have been born that everyone is doing well and also in case any mommas are in labour or distress.   It’s a nice little walk out, usually in my jammies and muck boots, a very stylish combination in farm fashion!  I love how quiet the homestead is.   Our animals are like us…  they sleep in!

That is one of those farm stories that everyone likes to ask of us…  how do you deal with getting up at the crack of dawn.   Well.  We don’t.   Our animals know that breakfast is anywhere from oh, 9 am to about 11 am.   And then dinner is later in the afternoon.   As long as you have a nice routine with them, they are fine.  In fact, our gang all sleep in!   I catch them all the time, way after sunrise, still snoozing!

This morning was so beautiful!   We had a very rainy day before and then this morning was all misty and foggy.  It was beautiful.  With the deep, rich green grass and the mist, it seemed as if I was stepping back into ancient Ireland.   Just so beautiful.

Quiet, too.   Just eery and silent.   There weren’t even as many cars and trucks as normally there is, this fine morning.

The pony boys were awake and just quietly wandering the back pasture looking for little nibbles of tall grass.   Of course, they had to come and visit, because I think they are surprised to see a food lady out so early!

I’m so thankful that our gang is all friendly and loves to come up and visit, even if it’s just a morning hello and a little scratch under the chin.   Of course, they LOVE it when I have a cookie or carrot for them, but that is not that often.  We have to watch the treats because we don’t want them being too pushy for goodies.   But I think they are just curious, too.   They love to see and know what is going on.  So they come to check it out.

I thought this was a cute picture.  I snuck up on the hogs and caught them all sleeping on their little pile nest.  All in a line.  So darling.  Onyx is finally starting to catch up a little bit, he’s still a small boy for sure!  Let’s hope he was enough boar to get the job done and we are looking at two litters in the next month or so!   Wouldn’t that be wonderful.   We love little piglets!!!

Well, that is my little photo trip in the early morning.   Out looking for baby lambs and just enjoying the whole homestead morning experience.   It’s just so beautiful, don’t you think?
