Meet Amber…

Amber is a kitty that was dumped here on the farm.  Pregnant.

Yeah, it’s a problem out here.  Folks seem to think that when an animal they can’t keep needs a home that being a farm or barn cat is a dream come true.   Fresh milk from the cow, nice hay to sleep in, mice to catch!

It’s really not the truth, folks.

Most “barn” cats live kind of rough lives.

If local dogs don’t get them, or they get hurt by livestock or machinery, wild critters are rough on their numbers.  If they become too plentiful, many farmers simply dispatch them.  It’s not an easy life.

Sure, many farm people have a soft spot for their kitties, and feed them, try and keep them safe, play with the little ones… but even our little place… we’ve only been here two years and this is our second litter of kittens from strays!

They are so adorable…  thankfully Jessy caught the mom before she went all feral on us and worked to get her tame and comfortable.  She’s doing great, even deals well with our dogs.  She’s a great mom… and went and had eight kittens!!!  Oh my!   One little sweet girl I want to keep as a new indoor kitty.  She’s the little tiger calico on the blanket above.

I miss my Jack so much… I didn’t think I wanted another cat.  But then, I just adore this little girl kitty…  and she seems to like me.  I call, and she runs to the gate and wants to be picked up!  She purrs so sweetly when I cuddle her.  She has stolen my heart for sure.

But she’s not going to be a barn cat.

I’m not totally sure what to do with all these little sweeties!  I so hope we can find them homes.  We did find a great shelter that will help us to neuter Amber and might be able to help home some of the kittens.  We have 2 more girls and 5 ginger kitty boys.  If anyone is interested… please let us know!  We’ve been playing with and handling them since they were born and they are super friendly and human conditioned!  We didn’t want them growing up all freaky and scared.

They were born on Earth Day…  and are 5 weeks old now.  Another couple weeks and they will be ready for wonderful forever homes.  Amber could use a home too…  she’s a very sweet kitty.  She doesn’t really like other kitties too much…  so she would probably be good as a single cat, or perhaps with one of her kittens.

I hope this is the last litter of kittens that we have for a good while… but I suspect it won’t be.  Our kitties are all fixed…  and I guess a few more of these ones will be as well, if they have to stay here…   Kittens are adorable…  and we are loving and enjoying these little rascals…   but I hope folks will stop abandoning their problems on our doorstep.  Please spay and neuter your pets.  There are plenty of low cost agencies that will help out.  There will always be kittens to go around…

  1. Amber will be fine around other cats once she’s fixed. Girl cats tend to be a bit prickly around cats they don’t know.

    • Thanks so much for your advice! I know you know what you’re talking about! :-). I wish we weren’t in this situation again but I just hate when folks just dump kitties off… We love kitties so much but 13 is a lot…
