Not too long ago… we had our first big spring rain fall and flood! We had over 2 inches fall in a day… boy, it made a bit of a mess. We were lucky though, our wonderful big farmer neighbor installed new drainage tile around the property to help with his fields and ultimately, helped us a lot. If it had been before that, we would have a lot more flooding. The ground was still pretty chilly and the rain was just not soaking in fast enough. We were mostly worried about the sheep and lambs, as that barn is prone to spring flooding from time to time. (First year, a lot… second year, some… and thankfully, now this third spring? The barn stayed dry!!!) It’s working!
I was surprised at how much the wheelbarrow was full! It was a lot of rain!
You can see our ditch creek in action! That thing does work well. We need to clean it out a bit, make it a bit deeper in places where the leaves and debris has accumulated some.
This is Lake Weedpatch… (haha) it’s where all the water from the ditch creek ends up! I had wanted to consider building a pond back here, but after talking to our neighbor, the farmer, he says it would probably not be a good idea. The ground is way too marshy and swampy and he thinks without proper lining and all, it will just end up a big mud hole. I think I will take his advice to heed. He’s been living here most of his life and working the ground. He knows the area. And it sounds expensive to build a good pond. I think that will have to wait for later.
The good thing is that Lake Weedpatch was gone within a day or so. We just had tooo much water in too little of time… It’s all lovely now!

That’s what my yard looked like every time it rained for a while. We were flooded out twice. Then I moved to higher ground… Miss the land though in the dry season…
