Just have to ask…

Has anyone had any experience with getting out of a Hughes.net contract without paying the cancellation fees due to lack of service? We just got the replacement modem and now it won’t work with the dish and they want to send a tech out for $135 and a 2 year renewal. I can’t believe this. Two hours on the phone, nothing. We haven’t had internet for almost 3 weeks now. I would consider this a breach of contract but well, what do I know. All I know is from reading page after page online about their very awful and deceptive practices and I just don’t know what to do at this point. Any suggestions????

  1. Sherri, call your state’s Attorney General’s office. The will direct you to the consumer protection department who then might have some options for you. I’m sorry for this wretched experience and frustration with hughes.net. Bad service is all I’ve ever heard about them.

  2. Hi Sherri,

Since you only have two or three months left with them, would finances allow you to go ahead and start up with the new server you are going to use and just let your Hughesnet contract run it’s course? If you aren’t paying anymore than about $50 a month for it, that might actually save you a “little money” over the $200 fee to get out of the contract and….a “LOT” of frustration too. Does breaking the contract cause a blight on your credit rating

  3. If I were you, I would try contacting the Better Business Bureau. They helped me in the past with a different company.

  4. I would contact the Better Business Bureau as soon as you can. If anybody would know, they would. I am sure they have had plenty of complaints against Hugesnet already. I’m lucky that my Hugesnet service has been good, but I don’t understand why they are charging you for this. We had the exact same problem and they replaced the modem for free. I still think they are evil though. Evil.

  5. Go to the FCC website and file a complaint as they are a regulatory agency for satellite providers. I had to do this with Sprint in order to resolve a false advertising an inept accounting series of issues.
If Hughes.net has authorization to EFT your bank account or credit card you can cancel that authorization with both Hughes.net and your bank. Call your bank first, then Hughes.net.

    • Thanks everyone!!!! I took the night to think about it and come up with a plan. I will be contacting the various agencies and making complaints and then will be going back to Hughes and making a huge fuss and see what I can get them to take responsibility with. Worse comes to worse, I will let the contract run out the 3 months. We have found another service and as soon as I can raise enough cash for the installation and all, we’ll go ahead with it, probably a week or so. We just need to have internet, it’s how we make our living. Thanks for all the advice!!!! You’re all awesome!!!!
