The Nugget Tractor…

Some little friends of ours really were wanting their new outdoor bedroom to get finished.

It was on the to do card list, but just wasn’t getting a high priority.

So last week, we finally got our act together and got it done.

Introducing… the Windhaven Chicken Nugget Tractor!!!

We were originally going to fashion it all out of scrounged materials, pallets and such.  But after looking over our stash, we concluded that it would look like crap and probably not last, so we opted to buy decent lumber and build it nice, so that it might last us several years instead of barely a month.

After all that, it was surprisingly inexpensive.  We just used basic 2 x 4s and drywall screws.  We spent $55 on it.  We used found materials for the roof, access lids and the one wind block side. It’s 12 feet long by 8 feet long.  Pretty heavy, but two people can still move it pretty easily.  The key is that it’s heavy enough that predators can’t just lift it and get at the nuggets.  We made it only 2 feet tall without roosts, because they really don’t seem to care about roosting.  Weird little chickens.  But they LOVE the fresh greens and sunshine.  And bugs.  And weeds.

I think the pictures will pretty much tell the story.  We built it in two days.  It was not hard at all and I think it’s pretty darn cool.  We haven’t lost a single bird since we moved all 28 out there.  No one is pecking on each other and they all look really happy and content out there.  They are like little pirana…  they do chew down the grass and weeds in just a day or two.  We are moving it around in our garden where we have a real weed problem.  They are really doing a number on it all just in a mere week!  Can’t wait till tomorrow when we start them on the thicker weeds.  Sweeeet!

The sheep are jealous.

They want a sheep tractor.

Actually, they just want to be let into the garden area to ravage all the plants and grass in there.  Haha.  Sorry.  No such luck there, ewes…
