Durn it…

Well… our first big set back. The furnace is dead.

Really dead.

Not worth it to fix, dead.

The combustion motor is dead, the control board, sensors, etc. Apparently at some point it was flooded and most of the stuff was rusted out and yucky. I am beginning to think that it was ruined back when the area flooded 4 or 5 years ago. I am also thinking that the people living here were not really here long, as renters. I’m not sure how they were heating the house in the winter, and I’m just not even sure they were in the place last winter. It’s all fine, but it’s puzzling.

We’re not discouraged at all, just have to figure out what to do now. It’s too cold to work in the house today, only about 40 degrees. Can’t paint. It’s supposed to be at least 50 degree for the paint to properly cure. Tomorrow, it’s suppose to SNOW. Who knows what is wrong with this weird weather.

Our problem is pretty simple, yet complex. We have 14 days until we need to renew our lot rent for the moby. And by a lot of the reports and such, it’s not going to get warm enough at night for us to sleep at the farm without some sort of supplemental heat. A whole new furnace is just not something we can pull off right now. We can get one, brand new, installed for $2,200. We can save that up and make it happen in the fall, but right now, we’re pretty tapped after buying the place for cash. So… I see it that we need to get by about a month, maybe a bit less.

We can stay in the moby for another month. That works, but we sure would love to be at the farm for good. Cost: $350 for rent.
Benefits: We can take more time to move plants, etc from the moby and we can more of the moving of our stuff and take more time to really get the house ready. Disadvantages: The cost of gas back and forth to the farm is getting expensive. And well, we just so want to be at the farm for good!

We can use supplemental heat, such as propane or kerosene heaters and heat up the core of the house so we can at least sleep there and stay warm in the night time. Cost: $100 for the heaters, and then the cost of fuel for a couple weeks. Benefits: Pretty little initial cost, and having the equipment for any power outages in the future. Disadvantages: Potentially hazardous, needs careful attention all the time.

We can get a wood stove, and use the OVER abundance of dead wood we have at the homestead to heat up the house at night, for sleeping. Cost: $300-$400 for stove, piping, etc. Benefits: We’d love to have one anyways, and planned for it. Very economical way to supplement the house year after year. Disadvantages: Don’t have a good place yet for it, not sure how to place it, and the cost for venting, etc. We have a chimney, but it’s buried in the walls and we’re not sure of it’s condition…

Those are our three big options. We have one last little chance… we have this little gas wall heater in the living room that for some reason is not getting gas. I have to call a local gas supplier and see if they can come out and do a safety check for all the house’s connections. Lance, our heating fellow, said that the regulator might not be working. If we can get that sorted out, it might be very helpful. Apparently it will heat a great amount of the house, if it works. Lance said it looks like it should work, it’s just not getting any gas right now. Will call about that tomorrow. Fingers are crossed!

Well.. in the end, it will work out and we’ll be able to move in eventually! It’s got to get warmer sooner… right?

Anyone have any other ideas???

Thanks!!!

Sherri, Jessy and Maggie

P.S…. We do have hot water now! Yeah Steve!!! Heat is our only problem right now…

  1. Are you aware of the WSOS program? Wood, Sandusky, Ottawa and Senaca County..and Im not sure what county you live in..but if its one of the above..and your within a certain income..at one time I used their services..and I was making “decent” money..let me know if your from one of those counties. They provide FREE..yes FREE HELP..including furnaces..they provided me with a brand new one AND a brand new roof!! The are funded from grants from the government,,and they do free or very low cost insulation, roof, furnace..you name it..even storm windows!..and this is an emergency I would think..so they could help you immediately…theres help out there..and dont be afraid to utilize it..someone else will if you dont. Good Luck.

  2. Hmmm… we are in Williams county. I know that with the Moby, we got some assistance the first year, but then last year they turned us down. We were tooooo rich! haha.. yeah. I should check into that, I’m just afraid they will say that it’s too late in the season. I thought some of that WSOS program “expires” the end of March or something like that. I will check in to it…. thanks!!!

  3. Here’s hoping you still qualify! That would be great if you could get some help.

Anthing on Craig’s list that would be oh help?
I once lived in a very old house that had no furnace originally…instead it was heated with gas space heaters. At some point in time a gas furnace was installed. The basement was wet and the furnace was installed on a six inch high cement pad. It was never right. The constant moisture kept rusting the ignition coupling.
I wished it still would have had the wall mounted room heaters. No runners or floor vents…just warm, even, constant heat.

Do you think something wall mounted would work for you? Today’s models have so many safety features, and the heat they put out is fantastic. I know you have doggies and kitties…but there are wire baskets around these units…and animals are naturally wary of fires…well, except cats sometimes…you KNOW how they love to soak up the warmth. (:

    • Yes, it’s definately an option because I am a bit worried about installing an expensive furnace and then if the flooding issue comes back, I’m out again! There is one wall heater in the house, like you mention. It’s the one up at the top of the post. I’m hoping we can get that running, but right now, it’s not getting any gas. It’s weird. I have to call the gas propane dealer and see if they can come out and test the various lines and such.

I’m not super excited about those, just well, they are big and have flames and such and like you said, I have kitties, who would probably leave it alone, but who knows what they might knock into it, or whatever.

I do know that we’re not in a big rush and we have lots of options to consider before the fall. It might just delay us a few weeks to actually moving in, but that’s okay in the whole scheme of things. There are SO many options!!!!

  4. http://www.wsos.org/program_details.php?id=32

it does look like its just the previous counties..but here are some phone numbers..and guidelines..and since its an Ohio grant..there MUST be other programs for your county..check it out Ms Sherri..spend some time on the phone..dont be shy about asking for your family..nothing wrong with help..and you deserve it..hope this helps..good luck

  5. That’s too bad about the furnace and that it wasn’t caught during the inspection. What about electric space heaters until you get something more permanent? Most have safety features that shut them off if they knock over. May be a little expensive in utilities though. I love wood stoves but you may have trouble getting house insurance as they usually require EPA certified new stoves, pipes, etc. and even then some companies can be reluctant.

Sherri, I sent the kids a gift from Renee’s Garden (asked about this in a post below that you must have missed) about 3 weeks ago. They said they sent them out right away but if you did not get them, please let me know and they will resend. I would appreciate it if you could advise as they are waiting to hear. (I will check back at this spot for a reply.) Thanks a ton.

The place is coming along nicely.

    • Oh yeah, thank you so much!! I’m so sorry, I was just going to post up something, but we’ve been going back and forth and all. We don’t go to our post office box a ton, so when I saw them there on Monday, and I had the girls, they were soooooo tickled!!! Thank you so much!!!

Just wait for our garden to start growing with the lovely rainbow selections you made!!!! I can’t wait…. they just tilled up the space yesterday!!!

Thank you again! Love that site and company!!!!

      • You are so very welcome. Sorry to be so anal to ask but I was just thinking if you did not get them (and it sometimes happens with mail) then we both would never know. :) I discovered that company a while back in a garden store and thought the packages were so neat. It made me want to grow everything. Seeds are such a wonderful gift. Can’t wait to see your garden. That soil looks amazing and you will be able to grow anything, I am sure. Thanks Sherri for letting me know.

  6. Electric heaters could really raise your electric bill, but when you consider you can buy them for $20 or $30 each, (don’t think you need a $300 Eden Pure or anything) what the heck, it may only be a month or so. The rule is: 1500 watts in = 5000 BTUs out. Don’t pay for fancy cabinetry. Those little utility heaters called “milkhouse heaters”are tough little units. Might be great investment anyway for future springs and falls when you just need the kitchen warmed up or the bathroom for shower time, when the rest of the house can be tolerated with a sweater on, or sleeping under cozy comforters. Propane is going nothing but up up up in price, as well.

I’m thinking 4 heaters plus the electricity cost for a month (they won’t be on ALL the time) will be equal to the car gas for the trips to Windhaven for a month. You’ll still be ahead the saved lot rent. That could go for appliances!

(Can you tell I am all for the move, ASAP!?!?! )
