Reclining Rams…

relaxingrams

Our ram pasture experiment is working out great!  Harley and Otis are the older two rams and we just weaned Travis from his mommie Bridget, and so he’s in with his big brothers.   He’s a whether, but we’re not 100% sure he’s totally fixed.   He was banded, but it almost looks like he might not have taken…  so just to be sure, he’s in with his studly brothers as an annoying little brother.  Who apparently gets the best seat in the pasture.  Since we’re rural, our trash pick up is very limited.  We had been given this recliner, but it’s broken, underneath, and very uncomfortable.  We just thought it would be funny to put it out in the field, let everyone use it and eventually, when it declines, we’ll just have to burn it or something.  Not sure.  But actually, it’s been out there almost a year now and still looks pretty decent, from a distance.   And the sheep enjoy it.   So does Duke our barn kitty.  He likes to take cat naps on the top.

Harley and Otis are really becoming good buddies.  They hang around together and are very caring to each other.  As you can see, Otis is resting his head on big buddy Harley’s back.  Harley is the oldest, then Otis and then Travis.  Each about a month apart.  Harley is 4 months old, Otis is about 3 and Travis is about 2 months.  Still babies!!!  They really like their shack and are finally getting the hang of going in there when it rains.  They also like laying in the little shady part of the pasture, under the big maple trees.  They seem quite content.  We like that we can see them from the house easily and every time we leave in the car.  Yet they are out of the main stream of back yard farm chores and such.  It’s a perfect ram set up, I do believe.

I wonder if they are upset that their moms don’t come and visit anymore.   Bridget did for about two days but now she’d rather just be with her ewe-friends.  Iris visited for a day, but then was off to greener pastures.  I believe they were done with the whole baby scene anyway, so it was a good time to make the weaning complete.  Daisy is VERY happy that Travis is no longer in the middle yard, she was very sick of him always trying to play humpy sheep with her.  And Buttercup was getting sick of having to protect her girlfriend from the over-attentive little lamb.  Travis has finally settled down as well and is not bawling for his mom anymore.   Harley pretty much kept at him until the little guy stopped.  And then Harley was calm and accepting of him.  Apparently, he was telling the little lad to get his big boy britches on and act like a man.  :-)

We’ll be adding the sides to their ram shack in the next few weeks as we can.  I want to make sure at least the western side is all enclosed soon, because that is where most of our heavy weather comes from.  SInce Maggie is really about a week away from being crutches free, we’re hoping that once she’s good and strong again, she’ll take on the final finish of our little shack!   She’s been itching to build and get back into a few project before the snow flies!
