The Maggie Report…

We’re working on week 2 of the broken leg saga of WIndhaven Farm…  I have to say, after all the drama and pain of week 1, week 2 has been a breeze!  Still not perfect, but so, so much better.  On Tuesday, she had her first check up and xray after surgery.  She’s got quite the little plate and pins in there, but her doc said it looked good.  The worse part of the visit was removing those 26 very painful staples!   Oh, she cried and I cried along with her, I just hate to see my kids in pain.  But thankfully, it was over and we could move on.  The nasty plastic splint was removed and she was introduced to ROBO BOOT… haha… at least that’s what we call it.  A huge big black boot thingy that she has to wear as much as possible.

She got a pair of hi tech crutches in the mail from Grandma and Grandpa…  they are called Mobi-Legs…   One of the night nurses told me about them and we checked them out online.  They wanted to do something to help get Maggie mobile and these were the perfect fit!    We had borrowed a pair of traditional crutches, but for some reason, she was having a lot of problems with them.  These new ones are really pretty darn neat!  Re-engineered after hundreds of years of static production in the field of crutches.  You can visit their website to see more about them…  We’ll have to try and get a picture of her using them so you can see them in action better.

They are very reasonably priced as well…  as we are finding, many things in the medical field for home care are really very expensive!  But these are under a hundred dollars and are really pretty darn cool.  She loves them so much more than the old granny walker.  She was up and at ’em right away and even got out back for some kitten and goat therapy time.  She even walked out to the pump and got a little chicken TV time.  That kid was all smiles for many an hour afterwards!   She misses all her little pals!

Speaking of kittens…   these guys are getting bigger and so darn cute!!!   We need to find them homes soon, NOW…  haha…  I have 11 cats hanging out in my screen porch at the moment and they are really making a bit of a mess.  They are all litter trained, but shesh, but 11 are making it an hourly chore to keep up on!  (If you are wondering… 8 kittens, 1 mom, and our 2 barn kitties….   The boys are hanging around the kittens and mom now, being uncles and enjoying all the things that Amber kills and brings home for her brood.  Haha… ahem.   Duke and Baron really don’t hunt anything but they sure love it when Amber brings home something interesting.  And they let the kittens play all over them and such.  Good uncles, eh?)

Kitty Lilly is perplexed by the big bunny…

Overall, Maggie is doing pretty darn well.  Her spirits are WAY improved this long week.  She’s resting a lot better now, and is not taking as much pain medicine.  Having the staples gone and all the heavy padding and such off the leg is very much more comfortable.  She still can not put any weight on that leg, but still, she can start to shower and get around a bit more now.  The swelling in the foot is getting much better as well.  I think Week 3 will be even better… we might even be able to get her outside a bit longer!   She will like that for sure!

  1. It looks like the bones are mending beautifully! All that hard work she has been doing over the last couple years probably helped build up her muscles and bone density. She was really strong and fit and that helps a lot getting around on those crutches. Hope she continues to make great progress. hugs, stef
