This month was about $60 more than last month, mainly due to the mud issues from spring rains. We had to use several bales of straw and shavings to dry up really bad areas. Our hay was consistent with last month, being close to 15-16 bales a month. I think that is a good representative of what we need per month during the winter months. If one figures 6 months of feeding hay, we will need approximately 90 bales for the winter. My goal is to get 100 bales stockpiled before next winter. Since I can easily fit 5 bales in the car at a time… I might start buying 5 bales a week towards the end of summer or find someone to deliver 100 bales at a time.
So far into this first week of May, I am happy that we’ve only had to buy 50 pounds of chicken feed! Our feed costs are really going to plummet now that the flock is out on grass and most of the birds are free ranging. Our 20 meat birds are just about finished up and that will help as well, since they eat quite a bit right now since they are big! And we supplement the rabbits with lots of fresh greens, grass and goodies from our garden.
Over all, not too bad… I budget about $100 a week for animals. Including the cats and dogs.
